Summary Examinations by electron microscopic and autoradiographic techniques of whether chloroform and halothane alter protein synthesis in rat liver, demonstrate, that chloroform causes an early destruction of the granular endoplasmatic reticulum accompanied by a marked decrease of the protein synthesis in the centre of the acini. After anaesthesia with halothane, the granular endoplasmatic reticulum and the protein synthesis proved to remain unaffected.

Summary On excitation of the superior laryngeal nerve and the recurrent nerve with single square wave shocks in patients undergoing total exstirpation of the larynx for cancer, a reflex potential can be recorded from the vocal muscle. This potential shows the criteria characteristic of the reflex potential arising on excitation of muscle spindles or the afferents of muscle spindles (la-fibres) in limb muscles. The pathway of afferent fibres is for the main part via the sup. lar. nerve but there seems to be an indication of a small part of afferents in the recurrent nerve also.

Summary The investigations concern the alterations of the plasma kininogen level of rats and rabbits during gestation. The results obtained with these animals are analogous to man. For this reason rats and rabbits are suitable models for further studies on the importance of the kininogen/kinin-system during pregnancy and delivery.

Summary Employing catalytic methods, the Mn- and Cu-content was determined in different cell fractions (chloroplasts, cytoplasts) of freeze-dried leaves ofValerianella olitoria isolated with a new dry method byBehrens et al.¹. Cu was found essentially in the fractions with high chloroplast content; Mn was found mainly in the fractions with low chloroplast content.     

Der Einfluss der experimentellen Leberschädigung auf Gesamtfett und ungesättigte Fettsäuren in Serum und Leber

Summary In experiments on rats with CCl₄-induced liver damage the total lipids and the di- to tetra-enoic fatty acids were estimated. The acute experiment of 72 h duration showed a strong augmentation of total lipids and a transitory diminution of arachidonic acid in serum and liver which two months after the intoxication still persisted together with a marked rise in linolenic acid. The parallelism of changes of saturation of the fatty acids in serum and liver being statistically significant indicates that the process of desaturation is most probably localized in the liver itself.

Summary The uptake of³⁵S, in the chondroitin sulfate of the costal cartilage of guinea pigs, is inhibited by cortisone, methyl-prednisolon, triamcinolon, and dexamethason. No inhibition could be seen under the influence of the natural adrenal hormone hydrocortisone and its nearest relation, prednisolon.     

Morphometrische Untersuchungen an der Rattenleber — Parenchymzelle nach Anwendung verschiedener Fixationspuffer

Summary The effect of 2 fixatives, (1) s-Collidin buffered OsO₄, (2) phosphate buffered OsO₄, on the liver cell was studied by morphometric analysis. After fixation with solution 2, large areas of smooth endoplasmic reticulum were covered by electron-opaque deposits of glycogen. No such masking was noticed by using solution 1. Other cell organelles showed no significant differences in their relative volumes. By using fixative solution 2, decrease in glycogen can simulate relative volume increase of the smooth endoplasmic reticulum.

Summary The effect of the alkylizing agent cyclophosphamide (100 mg/kg i.p.) on the cell cycle of the diploid (EAT dipl.) and hypertetraploid (ELT) Ehrlich ascites tumor growing in the peritoneal cavity of male NMRI-mice has been studied by autoradiography with H³- and C¹⁴-thymidine (double labelling technique and method of labelled mitoses). The results suggest that the proliferation kinetics of tumor cells after administration of cyclophosphamide is dependent essentially on the type of tumor strain tested.

Summary The effect of irradiation (500 R) on the cell cycle of the diploid (EAT_dipl.) and the hypertetraploid (ELT) Ehrlich ascites tumor growing in the peritoneal cavity of male NMRI mice has been studied autoradio-graphically by the double labelling technique (H³- and C¹⁴-thymidine) and the method of labelled mitoses. The results suggest that the proliferation kinetics of tumor cells after irradiation depends on the type of tumor cell strain tested. Identical results were obtained after application of the alkylating agent cyclophosphamide (100 mg/kg).

Summary The administration of adenosintriphosphate in a dosage sufficient to decrease mortality to a significant degree does not decrease the incidence of radiation pneumonitis. Thus, the effect produced by ATP seems to depend on its action upon protein metabolism rather than on morphological cell structures.

Summary The O₂-consumption of liver tissue of male rats of different ages during the first 10 days at an altitude of 3540 m was significantly decreased on the 5th and 7th day. The deviation from the controls at ground level was – 19% in 40-day-old and – 30% in 11-month-old male rats.
