The sun compass     
Summary The sun compass was discovered by G. Kramer in caged birds showing migratory restlessness. Subsequent experiments with caged brids employing directional training and clock shifts, carried out by Hoffmann and by Schmidt-Koenig, showed that sun azimuth is used and sun altitude ignored. McDonald found the accuracy to be ±3o–±5o. According to Hoffmann and to Schmidt-Koenig, caged birds trained at medium northern latitudes were able to allow for the sun's apparent movement north of the arctic circle but not in equatorial and trans-equatorial latitudes.In homing experiments, and employing clock shifts, Schmidt-Koenig demonstrated that the sun compass is used by homing pigeons during initial orientation. This finding supports the existence of a map and compass navigational system. Pigeons living in equatorial latitudes utilize the sun compass even under the extreme solar conditions of equinox (Ranvaud, Schmidt-Koenig, Ganzhorn et al.). The use of the sun compass during zenith passage of the sun is being investigated.  相似文献

Summary Recent experimental studies (since ca 1985) on the ontogeny of orientation mechanisms in migratory birds are reviewed. The processes and interactions are synthesized into a framework that may help identify critical research questions. Birds that grow up in the earth's magnetic field develop the ability to perform appropriate migratory orientation even in the absence of any experience with relevant visual cues. In two species, large changes in direction during the course of migration seem to be controlled by an endogenous time program. In one of these, the pied flycatcher (Ficedula hypoleuca), the correct magnetic orientation seems to occur only when the magnetic fields appropriate to the latitudes encountered en route were experienced at the proper seasonal time. The magnetic compass may be modified by visual experience with either the daytime or night sky. Celestial rotation may be the calibrating reference in this case, as it is in the development of the star compass. Young Savannah sparrows (Passerculus sandwichensis) learn to perform compass orientation at sunset based on polarized skylight. This compass capability seems to be calibrated by magnetic directions. Some problems of experimental design and the interpretation of results from experiments on development are discussed.  相似文献

The aim of this article is to shed light on an understudied aspect of Giordano Bruno's intellectual biography, namely, his career as a mathematical practitioner. Early interpreters, especially, have criticized Bruno's mathematics for being “outdated” or too “concrete”. However, thanks to developments in the study of early modern mathematics and the rediscovery of Bruno's first mathematical writings (four dialogues on Fabrizio's Mordente proportional compass), we are in a position to better understand Bruno's mathematics. In particular, this article aims to reopen the question of whether Bruno anticipated the concept of infinitesimal quantity. It does so by providing an analysis of the dialogues on Mordente's compass and of the historical circumstances under which those dialogues were written.  相似文献

We conducted orientation experiments with Silvereyes,Zosterops lateralis, Australian passerine migrants, to see whether birds living in the Southern Hemisphere in a magnetic field with an upward inclination orient in the same way as birds in the Northern Hemisphere that experience a downward inclination of the magnetic field. Tested indoors in the local geomagnetic field, the birds preferred southerly directions corresponding to their migratory direction in spring. In a magnetic field with a reversed vertical component, they reversed their directional tendencies. This shows that the magnetic compass of Silvereyes also functions as an inclination compass based on the inclination of the field lines instead of the polarity.  相似文献

With the advent of iron-built ships in the early nineteenth century the problem of managing a magnetic compass on board presented considerable difficulty. Prominent among the early scientists who tackled the problem were George Biddell Airy and William Scoresby. Airy had provided a mechanical system, employing correctors in the form of steel magnets and wrought iron masses, by which the ship's magnetic field at the compass position is neutralized. He based his system on the concept that the magnetism acquired by an iron ship during her construction remained with the ship throughout her life. Scoresby, on the other hand, thought differently. After having conducted a thorough and systematic series of experiments on iron plates and bars, he concluded that the magnetic character of an iron ship is liable to sudden and unexpected change. Scoresby argued, therefore, that Airy's system was defective and, indeed, dangerous. The aim of this paper is to discuss the two views which brought Airy and Scoresby into a conflict which is documented in a series of letters to the editor of The Athenaeum.  相似文献

Summary An advanced orientation capability offers possibilities for birds to optimize movement patterns in a wide variety of ecological situations. The adaptive significance of different patterns of angular dispersion and of orientation responses to topography and sociality are elucidated. The orientation capacity is characterized by flexibility, exemplified by reorientation promoting safety and restoration of fat reserves during migration. There are also limitations to the orientation process, leading to costs of migration through mis- or disorientation, and to constraints on the evolution of routes and timing of migratory flights. Young migrants may acquire an erroneous compass sense, and misorient several thousands of kilometers off their normal course. Widespread and dense fog of long duration causes disorientation and mortality among land birds migrating over the sea. Orientational constraints in the evolution of migration routes may be most easily disclosed at high geographic and magnetic latitudes. Here the birds are faced with special difficulties in using their celestial as well as their magnetic compasses. The sun compass could be used for great circle orientation, but observed spring flight trajectories of high arctic shorebirds and geese seem to conform with rhumbline routes.  相似文献

The geometry of the alternative reconstruction of Eudoxan planetary theory is studied. It is shown that in this framework the hippopede acquires an analytical role, consolidating the theorys geometrical underpinnings. This removes the main point of incompatibility between the alternative reconstruction and Simpliciuss account of Eudoxan planetary astronomy. The analysis also suggests a compass and straight-edge procedure for drawing a point by point outline of the retrograde loop created by any given arrangement of the three inner spheres. The metaphysical commitment to the circle as the essential element in the analysis of celestial motion has long been recognized as the hallmark of classical astronomy. What has not always been clear, however, is that the circle continued to serve Kepler as a central element in his astronomy after the discovery of the elliptical orbit of Mars. Moreover, the circle also functioned for Kepler in geometry to select the basic polygons, in music to select the basic harmonies, and in astrology to select the basic aspects. His basic set of polygons consisted of those figures that could be constructed using only a compass and a rule; the set of fundamental harmonies consisted of the consonances of the just intonation; and the traditional set of astrological aspects were enlarged by Kepler to include three new aspects in order to make the astrological set consistent with geometry and music. And as the circle served to unify these three areas, so also did it serve to supply the fundamental answers to astronomical problems well after the discovery of his new astronomy—a topic to be discussed in Part II of this paper.  相似文献

When a constraint is removed, confluent cells migrate directionally into the available space. How the migration directionality and speed increase are initiated at the leading edge and propagate into neighboring cells are not well understood. Using a quantitative visualization technique—Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV)—we revealed that migration directionality and speed had strikingly different dynamics. Migration directionality increases as a wave propagating from the leading edge into the cell sheet, while the increase in cell migration speed is maintained only at the leading edge. The overall directionality steadily increases with time as cells migrate into the cell-free space, but migration speed remains largely the same. A particle-based compass (PBC) model suggests cellular interplay (which depends on cell–cell distance) and migration speed are sufficient to capture the dynamics of migration directionality revealed experimentally. Extracellular Ca2+ regulated both migration speed and directionality, but in a significantly different way, suggested by the correlation between directionality and speed only in some dynamic ranges. Our experimental and modeling results reveal distinct directionality and speed dynamics in collective migration, and these factors can be regulated by extracellular Ca2+ through cellular interplay. Quantitative visualization using PIV and our PBC model thus provide a powerful approach to dissect the mechanisms of collective cell migration.  相似文献

Paired groups of rats (derived from divergent, selective breeding or living in divergent environmental conditions) were compared with regard to locomotor activities. Intrapair differences were found to vary non-systematically, depending upon whether the rats were initially exposed to a test-environment with or without a slight environmental modification (reactive activities), or were allowed to habituate extensively to the environment (spontaneous activity). Since the behavioral patterns were found to represent distinct entities, this pointed to the necessity of differentiating clearly between spontaneous and reactive activities and indicated, once again, that both genetic and environmental influences are important in these behaviors and must be taken into account. Accepting and controlling for these variables makes it possible to use the factor of individual differences in laboratory animal behavior to advantage.  相似文献

The reported experiment took place in a professional forecasting organization accustomed to giving verbal probability assessments (‘likely’, ‘probable’, etc.). It attempts to highlight the communication problems caused by verbal probability expressions and to offer possible solutions that are compatible with the forecasters overall perspective on their jobs Experts in the organization were first asked to give a numerical translation to 30 different verbal probability expressions most of which were taken from the organization's own published political forecasts. In a second part of the experiment the experts were given 15 paragraphs selected from the organization's political publications each of which contained at least one verbal expression of probability. Subjects were again asked to give a numerical translation to each verbal probability expression The results indicate that (a) there is a high variability in the interpretation of verbal probability expressions and (b) the variability is even higher in context. Possible reasons for the context effect are discussed and practical implications are suggested.  相似文献

Summary The long-term consequences of neonatal exposure to triethyl lead, the putative neurotoxic metabolite of the anti-knock gasoline additive tetraethyl lead, were examined with respect to central nervous system (CNS) development. We presently report a series of studies in which exposure of neonatal rats to organic lead produces profound CNS damage in adulthood as indicated by dose-dependent, persistent behavioral hyperreactivity as well as dose-dependent, preferential, and permanent damage to the hippocampus. General morphological parameters of brain development were not altered. Pharmacological probes of neurotransmitter system integrity suggested a functional and dose-dependent relationship between this behavioral hyperreactivity and hippocampal damage via cholinergic, but not dopaminergic, pathways. Furthermore, these alterations were not accompanied by long-term alterations in motor activity and were not attributable to the presence of lead in adult neural tissue. Finally, these behavioral, anatomical, and pharmacological indices of developmental exposure to organic lead were dissociable from any effects of early undernutrition. These data collectively indicate that organolead compounds may pose a potent neurotoxic threat to the developing CNS.  相似文献

In order to improve the efficiency of mussel chromosome preparation, a tissue culture procedure has been developed. Mantle and foot explants were grown in tubes in media composed of Eagle's Basal Medium supplemented either with salts or seawater, enriched with egg yolk, adjusted to pH 7.50, and containing penicillin and streptomycin. After 4 days of incubation at 18°C, antibiotics were renewed and after 6–7 days, cultures were ready for harvesting and preparation of microscopical slides. The cultures were a source of actively dividing cells and consistent metaphase spreads were obtained. Evidence from BrdU incorporation suggested that cells could undergo several rounds of replication. The chromsome spreads were good enough for karyotyping and to successfully silver stain the nucleolar organizer regions.  相似文献

结合中国嫦娥三号月球车探测的科学应用目标,提出了一种基于投影变换的机械臂探测点定位方法.该方法在总结鱼眼镜头成像模型基础上,建立球面投影与透视投影间的转换关系,求得球面投影中像主点坐标和球半径,利用相关参数将球面投影图像转化为透视投影图像;结合月球车上鱼眼相机的安装位置相对固定,将转换后的透视投影图像重采样生成核线影像.利用相关系数和最小二乘匹配,在鱼眼相机核线影像上实现特征点的亚像素级匹配.通过前方交会计算探测点的三维坐标,并结合探测点邻域点坐标拟合最佳空间平面,获取平面的法向量,即机械臂探测点的定位.采用该方法对仿真图像进行了定位计算,并将计算值与仿真真值进行比较,总误差约为2 mm.实验结果表明,该方法完全能够满足嫦娥三号月球车机械臂探测的定位精度.  相似文献

Summary Diethyldithiocarbamate, an inhibitor of Cu,Zn-superoxide dismutase, was recently found to be ulcerogenic in the rat stomach, and active oxygen species were found to be responsible for its ulcerogenicity. To clarify which active oxygen species play a role in ulcerogenesis, the effects of various scavengers and iron-chelators were studied. As superoxide dismutase and catalase reduced the ulcerogenesis induced by diethyldithiocarbamate, the superoxide radical and hydrogen peroxide were considered to play a pathogenic role in this ulcer model.  相似文献

Summary Two closely related species of Gentianaceae were established in tissue culture and transferred to a regeneration medium containing 2,4-D. Even though the age of cultures and all the environmental conditions were identical, only one of them expressed a clear morphogenic potential, and the differences are expressive in the isozyme banding patterns observed for creatine phosphokinase, lactate dehydrogenase and indoleacetaldehyde dehydrogenase. A number of neuropeptides were isolated from the ganglia and muscles of molluscs, and their actions were examined. Diverse neuropeptides, in addition to several classical neurotransmitters, were suggested to be involved in the regulation of the anterior byssus retractor muscle of Mytilus. A wide structural variety of members of the Mytilus inhibitory peptide family was observed in each of the genera Mytilus, Achatina and Helix. Gly-Trp-NH2, the C-terminal dipeptide fragment of the neuropeptide AGPWamide, showed a more potent action than the parent peptide in all of the muscles examined. Peptides related to some molluscan neuropeptides were found to be distributed interphyletically. Some neuropeptides containing a D-amino acid residue were found in Achatina and Mytilus. These aspects of molluscan neuropeptides are thought not to be exceptional.  相似文献

Citrullinemia is a recessive genetic disease caused by a deficiency in argininosuccinate synthetase (AS). Retroviruses were used to transduce the human AS gene into cultured human cells. Using amphotropic viruses with high titer (>106 cfu/ml), we were able to correct the defect in cultured fibroblasts from citrullinemic patients. Retroviral transduction of the human AS gene into human bone marrow cells was also studied. Co-cultivation was used to infect the cells and up to 80% of progenitor cells were found to be carrying and expressing the AS retrovirus after infection. When the infected cells were kept in culture, integration and expression of the retrovirus was observed. Retroviral sequences were present and expressed in the cultured bone marrow-derived cells for up to 10 weeks.  相似文献
