Studies on peripheral neurons and neurohaemal tissue in the thorax of the stick insect (Carausius morosus)

Summary The distribution of peripheral neurosecretory and non-neurosecretory neurons, and transverse nerve neurohaemal swellings, is described in the thorax ofCarausius morosus. The electrical activity of the isolated transverse nerves has been recorded.We are grateful to the Science Research Concil for financial support, and to Dr Sue Fifield and Steven Irving for methylene blue and electron microscope preparations.

Résumé Nous avons trouvé que le facteur Hageman (factor XII), contenu dans le plasma humain citraté, pauvre en plaquettes, est adsorbé presque sélectivement par le collagène. Il est également possible d'éluer ce facteur au pH alcalin.

Summary The cultivation of a rheumatogenic strain of group A streptococcus in presence of human heart valve connective tissues leads to the release of substance(s) reacting with antistreptococcal polysaccharide and antihuman glycoprotein antibodies.     

Temperature-dependent activity of mosquito larvicidal factor(s) present inBacillus sphaericus 1593–4 and 1691

Summary The larvicidal factor(s) ofBacillus sphaericus 1593–4 and 1691 was more active at high temperature (33–35 °C) as compared to low temperature (23–25 °C) for the larvae ofCulex fatigans andAnopheles subpictus.     

Studies on DNA methylase activity in mammalian tissue

Resumen Para aislar nucleo de mamíferos que contienen DNA metilasa actividad se utilizó como medio homogenizante 0.25M sucrosa-1×10^–2 M EDTA. Hígado de rata y el hepatoma de Reuber demostraron cantidad equivalente de actividad enzimática. Se observó aproximadamente 100% de inhibición con amoníaco 0.15M, los iones de Mg no mostraron efecto.     

Solubility of the hypothalamic hormones TSH-releasing factor (TRF) and LH-releasing factor (LRF) in organic and alcoholic solvents

Résumé L'hormone hypothalamique TRF (TSH-releasing factor) est soluble dans l'alcool méthylique à 90%, partiellement soluble dans l'alcool méthylique absolu ou le chloroforme; TRF n'est pas soluble dans la pyridine. Le chlorure de méthylène (dichlorométhane) n'extrait pas le TRF d'une solution aqueuse (préparation hautement purifiée, 15000 U/mg). L'hormone hypothalamique LRF (LH-releasing factor) n'est pas soluble dans le chloroforme mais est soluble dans l'alcool méthylique absolu ou à 90%.

川西箭竹群落生态学研究

箭竹是大熊猫的主食竹，主要分布在亚高山地带，是亚高山森林下层重要的优势层片。对箭竹生态学研究主要集中在种群结构、生长、更新、生物生产力、繁殖特性及其在亚高山森林系统水土保持、养分平衡等生态功能发挥中的作用等几方面。而有关箭竹层片对整个森林生态系统养分循环动态过程和机理、箭竹种群生活史动态格局、开花机理、人为干扰下箭竹群落及森林群落更新的过程等方面的研究相对滞后。建议加强箭竹层片在亚高山针叶林生态系统结构和养分循环动态过程中的作用，箭竹克隆生长过程与森林群落更新过程的互动机理、箭竹种群生活史过程中养分源库动态、人为干扰下箭竹克隆种群更新过程与森林更新过程互动等方面的研究。     

Reflections on Kant’s concept (and intuition) of space

In this paper, I investigate an important aspect of Kant’s theory of pure sensible intuition. I argue that, according to Kant, a pure concept of space warrants and constrains intuitions of finite regions of space. That is, an a priori conceptual representation of space provides a governing principle for all spatial construction, which is necessary for mathematical demonstration as Kant understood it.     

Assessment of superoxide-mediated release of vascular-inhibitory factor(s) from endothelial cells by using a two-bath system

Release of a vascular-inhibitory factor from endothelial cells (EC), different from endothelium-derived relaxant factor (EDRF), was identified through use of a two-bath system. This two-bath system precluded the effects of oxygen-free radicals that appear when electrical field stimulation (EFS) is directly imposed on detector muscle.
