Phasic hippocampal activity during paradoxical sleep in the rat: selective suppression after diazepam administration

Summary The effects of diazepam on tonic (T) and phasic (P) components of the paradoxical-sleep hippocampal theta rhythm were studied in the rat. Results show that diazepam, a benzodiazepine analogue known to interfere with the putative neurotransmitter -aminobutyric acid (GABA) in the mammalian central nervous system, selectively abolishes P. They confirm previous data according to which sedative/anaesthetic drugs cause, an apparent dissociation of T and P of the paradoxical-sleep hippocampal theta rhythm. Moreover, they suggest a possible involvement of GABA in the neurochemical mechanisms underlying P in the rat.

Defensive steroids from a carrion beetle (Silpha americana)

Summary The defensive anal effluent discharged bySilpha americana in response to disturbance contains a mixture of steroids stemming from a glandular annex of the rectum. The compounds have been characterized as 15-hydroxyprogesterone (1, principal component), 5-pregnan-15-ol-3, 20-dione (2), 5-pregnan-3, 15-diol-20-one (3), 5-pregnan-7, 15-diol-3,20-dione (4), 5-pregnan-3, 7, 15-triol-20-one (5), 5-pregnan-16-ol-3,20-dione (6), and 5-pregnan-3, 16-diol-20-one (7), none previously found in insects. Bioassays with jumping spiders showed compounds1 and6 to be feeding deterrents at the 1 g level.Paper No. 78 of the series: Defense Mechanisms of Arthropods. Synthesis and pharmacological properties of [1-N4-dimethyl-asparagine]-angiotensin II

Summary [1-N⁴-Dimethyl-asparagine]-angiotensin II was synthesized by Merrifield's solid-phase procedure. The analogue gave rat blood pressure about 70% relative potency to Hypertensin (Ciba). Thiamin turnover rate in some areas of rat brain and liver: A preliminary note

Summary Thiamin turnover rates in some nervous structures and liver of rats were evaluated in a steady state condition, using thiamin-¹⁴C as a tracer. The radioactivity contents were analyzed by means of a mamillary type compartmental model. Excluding the liver, turnover rate values of the nervous structures were ordered in the following sequence: sciatic nerve (0.58 g/g·h)>cerebellum>hypothalamus>midbrain>corpus striatum>cerebral cortex (0.16 g/g·h).The mathematical section of this work, developed by V.C. and C.R., was supported by C.N.R., Rome, through the Laboratorio di Analisi numerica, Pavia, Italy. Real-time models of morphogenetic processes

Summary Morphological transformations are often describable by simple series kinetic models,AB, ABC, etc., which allow assessment of the rates of interconversion of the distinguishable shapes or forms present and their probabilities of occurrence at various points in time, thus providing a means for kinetic comparisons with biochemical measurements of the molecular-level reactions that cause the transformations. When changes in cell morphology are followed turbidimetrically, the real-time progress curves can be simulated by fitting the data to a form of Beer's law for scattering by mixtures in which the species concentrations change with time in accordance with the chosen kinetic scheme. Because many even relatively large cells are mostly water, classical light scattering theory can be used to interpret the turbidimetric data in terms of simple geometrical models ofaverage cell size and shape suggested by microscopic examination. Two examples are briefly considered, the stimulus-induced changes in blood platelet shape and apparent size and their correlation with cytosolic-free calcium, and apparent swimming motion exhibited by neutrophils in suspension.What do you know about this business? the King said to Alice. Age distribution of circulatingα-interferon

Summary A sensitive radioimmunoassay showed that circulating -interferon in the plasma of healthy individuals was low in children and reached the highest level in the young adult, then declined gradually with age. Circulating -interferon was 0.201±0.059 ng/ml in males (n=19) and 0.184±0.076 ng/ml in females (n=14) at ages 30–39 years old. It was noted that circulating -interferon was maintained up to a certain level even in elderly individuals.
