Synthesis of trypsin inhibitor CMTI III from squash seeds (Cucurbita maxima)

Summary Using the solid-phase procedure, a 29-peptide cross-linked by three disulphide bridges was synthesized. The synthetic product was shown to be identical with the trypsin inhibitor CMTI III from squash seeds (Cucurbita maxima).Acknowledgments. Catecholamine-containing nerve fibres in the hind-gut of the crayfishAstacus astacus L. (Crustacea,decapoda)

Zusammenfassung Katecholamin enthaltende Nervenfasern im Enddarm vonAstacus astacus (L.) werden mit Hilfe vonFalcks undHillarps spezifischer Fluoreszenzmethode gezeigt. Die Fasern, die eine grüne Fluoreszenz abgeben, wurden in Nervenplexen der zirkulären und der längsgehenden Muskelschichten des Darmes beobachtet. Es wird angenommen, dass diese Fluoreszenz durch Noradrenalin zustande kommt.

Co-localization of glucagon and pancreatic polypeptide in testudine pancreas

Summary Immunocytochemistry was carried out on sections of pancreas from the gopher tortoise,Gopherus polyphemus. Combined immunofluorescent and peroxidase-anti-peroxidase techniques showed unequivocally that some of the cells were immunoreactive for both glucagon and pancreatic polypeptide (PP). Antibodies directed against avian PP, bovine PP, and human PP all have a positive reaction. Co-localization of glucagon and PP in the pancreas of the gopher tortoise indicates that the occurrence of these hormones in the same cells is widespread in higher vertebrates.Acknowledgments. Immunofluorescent demonstration of pancreatic polypeptide (PP) in pancreas and digestive tube of bony and cartilaginous fish]

When antisera specific against bovine PP (BPP) were used, immunoreactive parenchymal cells were observed in the endocrine pancreas and in the gastro-intestinal tract of the teleost bony fish Cottus scorpius, as well as in the pancreas of the elasmobranchian cartilaginous fish Squalus acanthias. Of the two principal islets of Cottus, PP-cells were located selectively to that in the pyloric region.     

Imparied bone resorption of cultured calvaria from mice with abnormal lysosomal function (the Chediak-Higashi syndrome)

Summary Spontaneous bone resorption is reduced in cultured calvarial bones from mice with the Chediak-Higashi syndrome, as indicated by decreased mobilization of calcium from the bones to the medium. Although bone resorption in calvaria from mice with this disease can be stimulated by PGE₂ and 1 (OH)D₃, the amounts of mineral released after stimulation is also decreased.This investigation was supported by grants from the Swedish Association against Rheumatic Diseases, from the Royal 80 Year Fund of King Gustav V, and from the Swedish Medical Research Council (project No 14X-05426).     

Phaeomelanic pigments from a human melanoma

Summary The pigments in melanomas from 2 patients were studied with regard to solubility and chemical composition. Melanoma pigment from a patient with red-blonde hair was alkali-soluble and contained 9 or 10% sulfur and was thus of phaeomelanic type. Melanoma pigment from a patient with red-brown hair was insoluble in 0.2N NaOH. Its sulfur content was 6%. Occurrence of trichochromes in the urine of a melanoma patient

Light evoked release of radioactivity from rabbit retinas preloaded with (3H)-GABA

Summary Light flashes evoke an increased release of radioactivity in vitro from rabbit retinas preloaded with (³H)-GABA in vivo. Constant light does not affect the release. No light evoked release can be demonstrated from the glia. Pentobarbitone and AOAA depress the evoked release. The results are consistent with GABA being a retinal neurotransmitter, most likely in a class of amacrines.This work was supported by grants from the Swedish Medical Research Council (project 04X2321), The Faculty of Medicine, University of Lund, Royal Physiographic Society.     

Distribution of noradrenaline in the genital organs of the female rat with a remark on dopamine in the cervix and vagina

Zusammenfassung Durch Bestimmung des organeigenen Noradrenalingehalts wird die adrenergische Innervation der weiblichen Geschlechtsorgane der Ratte untersucht. Die Hauptmenge des Noradrenalins (0,3µg/g) wird im Tuba uterina gefunden, der vierfache Betrag von Uterusinhalt. Daneben wurde Dopamin in Cervix und Vagina nachgewiesen.

Purification of plasminogen activator(s) from human seminal plasma

Summary Human seminal plasma contains an activator of plasminogen which was chromatographically purified. The molecular weight was determined to be 67,000.This study was supported by grants from the Swedish Medical Research Council (No. B75-17X-4523-01).     

Immunohistochemical detection of a substance resembling growth hormone-releasing factor in the brain of the rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri)

We studied the distribution of an immunoreactive substance resembling growth hormone-releasing factor (GRF) in the hypothalamus and pituitary gland of the rainbow trout by immunofluorescence methods. The GRF-like immunoreactive perikaryon was observed in colchicine-treated fish. The majority of GRF-containing neurons were located in the nucleus lateral tuberis; others were located in the caudal part of the preoptic nucleus of the hypothalamus. The GRF-like immunoreactive neuronal processes projected into the pars distalis via the pars nervosa of the pituitary gland. The distribution of the GRF-like immunoreactive substance in the hypothalamus and pituitary gland suggests that GRF plays a physiological role in the regulation of growth hormone release from the pituitary gland of rainbow trout, as it does in mammals.     

Isolation of 2-S-cysteinyldopa and 2,5-S,S-dicysteinyldopa from the urine of patients with melanoma

The identification of dehydroretinol (vitamin A2) in human skin

Summary Vitamin A₂ has for the first time been identified in a human tissue and, in contrast to vitamin A₁, its concentration in the epidermis is markedly increased in a hyperkeratotic condition (Psoriasis vulgaris).Acknowledgments. Labelling of ribosomal RNA peaks in the liver of rats after administration of tritiated fluorouracil

Zusammenfassung Nach i.p. Injektion von 5-Fluorouracil-³H wurde bei Ratten zu verschiedenen Zeiten die RNS-Neubildung der Leber bestimmt. Die Resultate sprechen dafür, dass Fluorouracil in die ribosomale RNA der Leber eingebaut wird.

Some D cells were observed to contain secretory granules with both the appearance and immunoreactivity of A cell secretory granules.

Zusammenfassung Die Primärstruktur des Insulins ist bei Hund und Schweinidentisch. Elektronenmikroskopisch wurde festgestellt, dass die sekretorischen Granulae der pankreatischen-Zellen bei beiden Arten eine unregelmässige Form haben. Eine quantitative Analyse ergab jedoch, dass die-Granulae des Hundes länger sind als die des Schweines.

Effects of starvation and Ca++ on glucose-induced accumulation of cyclic 3′,5′-AMP in pancreatic islets

Summary Exposure to glucose in the presence of 3-isobutyl-1-methylxanthine leads to accumulation of cAMP in islets microdissected fromob/ob-mice. This process is dependent on extracellular Ca⁺⁺ but differs markedly from the glucose action on insulin release in the same in vitro system in disappearing after 18 h of starvation.Supported by the Swedish Medical Research Council (No. 12x562).
