Urban transport policy response to global climate change in China

Accompanying with the economic development and the process of industrialization and urbanization in China, the energy consumption and greenhouse gases emission of transport sector increased rapidly. From the viewpoint of how the urban traffic management department should cope with the global climate change, based on the economy, institutional reform, planning and policies in China, the paper analyzed the main important problems and obstacles in the development of urban transport, put forward the corresponding policy recommendations which could lead the urban transport system transform to low carbon emission and become more suitable to the climate change.

Opportunities and challenges for a sustainable energy future

Access to clean, affordable and reliable energy has been a cornerstone of the world's increasing prosperity and economic growth since the beginning of the industrial revolution. Our use of energy in the twenty-first century must also be sustainable. Solar and water-based energy generation, and engineering of microbes to produce biofuels are a few examples of the alternatives. This Perspective puts these opportunities into a larger context by relating them to a number of aspects in the transportation and electricity generation sectors. It also provides a snapshot of the current energy landscape and discusses several research and development opportunities and pathways that could lead to a prosperous, sustainable and secure energy future for the world.     

Materials and sustainable development

Sustainable development is a concept, which involves social, ecological and economic objectives, and requires to sustain the integrity of resources exploitation, the direction of investments, the orientation of technological development and institutional change. Although there is still much confusion and conflict about exact meaning of sustainable development, many agree that sustainable development is about satisfying social, environmenta l, and economic goals. While th e concept is generally accepted and relatively easy to comprehend, the difficulty arises in trying to apply the principles of sustai nable development in practice. One of the difficulties is need to measure the “level of sustainability”. The desirable characteristics for sustainability indicators have to include: simple to calculate, useful for decision making, and robust in indicating progress towa rd sustainability. The exergy analysis a pproach based on full life cycle assessment (LCA) of the materials and technologies is a useful metrics to evaluate mitigation of green house gas (GHG) emissions associated with industrial eco materials and technologies. The metrics is used for reducing dimensionality on the input side by combining material and energy streams and out put side reducing different characterisation factors to a single “unsustainability” indicator in a theoretically rigorous manner. The adopted approach has been illustrated on a few examples associated with Australian aluminium industry.

湖北省温度与降雨对全球变化响应的时空差异分析

以湖北省国家级气象站点1959年～2008年逐日气温和降水量数据为依据,运用累积距平、滑动平均、Mann-Kendall检测法以及空间插值法等方法分析湖北省温度与降水时空变化特征,分析影响和制约变化的因素.结果表明,湖北省近50 a来,年平均气温总体呈上升趋势,气温与降雨具有明显的代际时间梯度与空间变异性,站点间气温与降雨变化率具有显著的区域差异性.

蓄能运行即通过不同蓄能设施利用电网低谷剩余电能储存转换，变成和再生能源一样，可周而复始更新使用，形成可持续发展的循环机制。蓄能设施涵盖抽水蓄能和其他蓄电、蓄能装置。当今水电发展受限于水能资源，在原电力开发基础上再考虑蓄能运行后可使之步入新的境界，有利于风电等新能源和整个电网的可持续发展。     

Neoproterozoic magmatic activity and global change

Neoproterozoic is a very important time in the history of the Earth, during which occurred supercontinent breakup, low-latitude glaciation, and biotic diversification.These concern a series of interdisciplinary studies involving ancient plate motion, climate change and life evolution, resulting in many forefront topics of general interest in the earth sciences. These include exact ages bracketing the Cryogenian System and glaciations, initial age and lasted duration of supercontinent breakup, dynamic reconstruction of China continents in supercontinental configurations, the nature of rift magmatism and extent of hydrothermal alteration, paleoclimatic implication of water-rock interaction and Iow-^18O magmatism, and relationship between supercontinental evolution and global change. A number of outstanding advances in the above aspects have being made by Chinese scientists, leaving many important issues to be resolved: (1)did the Cryogenian start at either 800 to 820 Ma or 760 to 780 Ma? (2) was South China in the supercontinental configuration located in either southeast to Australia or north to India? (3) are Paleoproterozoic to Archean ages of crustal rocks a valid parameter in distinguishing North China from South China? Available observations suggest that Neoproterozoic mantle superwelling occurred as conspicuous magmatism in South China but as cryptical magmatism in North China. Mid-Neoproterozoic mantle superplume event and its derived rift-magmatism would not only result in the supercontinental demise, but also play a very important role in the generation and evolution of the snowball Earth event by initiating the global glaciation, causing the local deglaciation and terminating the snowball Earth event.
