Calcitonin: effect on protein synthesis in different rat tissues

Protein synthesis was inhibited in the pancreas whereas it was enhanced in the kidney and intestine (jejunum-ileum) after a single injection of porcine calcitonin (20 MRC units/kg b.wt). The incorporation of [3H]leucine into total protein in the brain, heart, liver and stomach did not change after the hormone treatment.

Localization of human A,B and H isoantigens in Cynomolgus monkey tissues

Summary The presence and distribution of human A, B and H isoantigens were demonstrated in Cynomolgus monkey (Macaca fascicularis) by means of red cell adherence test. Although no human antigens were found on primate erythrocytes, various epithelial tissues revealed the presence of A, B or H antigenic substance. The distribution and localization was similar to that found in human tissues. Majority of specimens from each individual animal possessed only 1 human type isoantigen with the exception of the salivary and sweat glands, where all animals showed the presence of H antigen in addition to other specificity, and of Brunner's gland, where all sections reacted positively also for A antigen.     

Mechanism of decreased erythropoiesis in thyroidectomized rats

Resumen El volumen de la masa roja circulante descendió en un 24% en ratas radioyodotiroidectomizadas después de 8 meses de administrado et I¹³¹. Hubo un descenso similar en la sintesis diaria de hemoglobina/100 g de peso corporal. Los estudios de la cinética del hierro fueron semejantes en ambos grupos. No hubo aumento de la eritropoyesis inefectiva ni del periodo intermitótico medular. El número de células eritroides en la médula ósea de las ratas atiroideas mostró una disminución significativa con respecto a los animales controles, hecho que seria el responsable de la anemia post-tiroidectomia.

Plasma transcortin concentration in thyroidectomized chick embryos

Summary Concentrations of transcortin binding sites and apparent dissociation constants for corticosterone have been measured in the blood of control and thyroidectomized chick embryos. The levels of corticosterone binding are quantitatively similar in normal and thyroidectomized embryos and vary in parallel during development.     

High affinity binding of labeled androgens in the androgen-target tissues of the male rhesus monkey

Summary High affinity testosterone (T)-specific and dihydrotestosterone (DHT)-specific binding sites exist in a 12 ratio in the cytosol fractions of the caput epididymidis, prostate, seminal vesicles and the ductus deferens of the rhesus monkey. The number of androgen-binding sites in the caput epididymidis is 3 times greater than that of the other 3 tissues.This investigation was supported by financial assistance from the Indian Council of Medical Research and the University Grants Commission.     

Lysosomal acid hydrolases of normal adipose tissues of man,monkey and rat

Summary The activities of 3 lysosomal acid hydrolases were examined in the normal adipose tissues of 3 species, man, monkey and rat and very low levels of these hydrolases were found.Acknowledgments. The action of iodine upon thyroidectomized frog larvae

Résumé L'alimentation des larves de grenouille sans thyroïdes avec un mélange d'iode et de farine (Pablum) a provoqué la métamorphose, ce qui confirme les investigations deSwingle ¹, aussiLipner etHazen ⁵. La radiochromatographie de la bile et du foie hydrolysé, après immersion des larves dans NaI¹³¹, ne révéla pas la présence de thyroxine ou diiodotyrosine. La chromatographie de l'iode-farine après hydrolyse, fit apparaître de la monoiodotyrosine et de la diiodotyrosine, mais après hydrolyse de la farine, on trouva seulement de la monoiodotyrosine. Il est probable que la thyroxine, synthétiséein vitro à partir de la diiodotyrosine, le pH étant alcalin, fut le facteur qui déclencha la métamorphose des larves sans thyroïdes.     

Protein synthesis in the brain of rats thyroidectomized at birth

Zusammenfassung Im Rattenversuch wurde die Möglichkeit, dass eine Störung in der Proteinsynthese für die geistige Retardierung beim Kretinismus verantwortlich sei, untersucht. Ein Beweis dafür, dass die Funktion neuronaler Polysome durch Thyroidektomie bei der Geburt geschädigt wird, wurde nicht erbracht.     

Calcitonin stimulation of pyrophosphatase activity in rat bone

Zusammenfassung Calcitonin als neues kalzium- und phosphor-senkendes Hormon wurde auf seine Wirkung auf die inorganische Pyrophosphataseaktivität von Knochen untersucht. Eine Steigerung der alkalinen Pyrophosphataseaktivität wurde vor der starken Senkung des Serum-Kalziums beobachtet.     

Potency of thyroid hormone analogues in suppressing prolactin-mediated mammary growth in thyroidectomized rats.

An antagonism between prolactin and thyroxine, similar to that found in amphibian tissues at metamorphosis, has been recently shown to occur at the level of the rat mammary epithelium. This phenomenon may be implicated in the pathogenesis of human breast cancer. This experiment demonstrates that two analogues of thyroid hormone, triiodothyropropionic acid and triiodothyroacetic acid, which are relatively very weak in their calorigenic action, are as potent as thyroxine and triiodothyronine in inhibiting the prolactin-mediated mammary growth in thyroidectomized rats. The possible implication of this finding in the treatment of mammary cancer is discussed.     

Restitution of the reduced heat tolerance of thyroidectomized animals with thermothyrine

Zusammenfassung In früheren Arbeiten wurde über die herabgesetzte Wärmetoleranz schilddrüsenloser Tiere berichtet. Werden solche operierten Tiere in einen Thermostaten von 34–35° C gebracht, so steigt ihre Körpertemperatur schneller und höher als die der normalen Kontrolltiere. Diese, nach der Entfernung der Schilddrüse auftretende, gestörte Wärmetoleranz konnte nicht mit Thyroxin gebessert werden. Sie wurde deshalb als eine Ausfallerscheinung des thyroxinantagonistischen Schilddrüsenhormons, des Thermothyrins A (KühlhormonMansfelds) aufgefaßt. Dieses wird — wie bekannt — von der Thyreoidea ausgeschüttet, wenn der Organismus in die Gefahr einer Überhitzung gerät. Es vermag den Gesamtstoffwechsel (die Wärmebildung) im Interesse der Wärmeregulation herabzusetzen.In den beschriebenen Versuchen konnte der Beweis erbracht werden, daß die herabgesetzte Wärmetoleranz schilddrüsenloser Tiere mit der Verabreichung von Thermothyrin gebessert, bzw. wiederhergestellt wird. Manchmal kann sie sogar über die der normalen Kontrolltiere gesteigert werden.
