For the doomed tragedy of the heroine, the surrouding area is an unavoidable part to be mentioned, such as the influence of Victoria Age, capitalistic hypocritical moality and Darwinism. This paper tries to probe into this point by a brief analysis of the novel Tess of D’urbervilles, and then, leads to a better understanding of this great work.

On the measurement for the speed of gravity

Newton’s law of gravity is a theory of instantaneous action at a distance.However,Einstein’s general relativity states that the speed of gravity equals the speed of light,which is finite.Therefore,it is a worthy problem to discuss if Newton’s law of gravity needs modification,when studying and observing the gravitational tidal.In this paper,it is shown that the Newton’s law of gravity is fully applicable in the framework of general relativity.Based on the post-Newtonian approximation,we find that the observable effect for the speed of gravity is irrelevant to the velocity of a moving source,but it is dependent on its acceleration.In general,the effect of the speed of gravity is so weak that today’s any astronomical observations,including the sun tidal observations,can not confirm that the gravitational field travels at the speed of light.     

The stress response factor RpoS is required for the natural transformation of Escherichia coli

The natural transformation of Escherichia coli is a novel and recently developed system that has signifi- cance for genetic studies and the biological safety of genetic engineering. However, the mechanisms of transformation, including development of competence and DNA uptake, are not thoroughly understood. In this study, we demonstrated the effect of the general stress response regulator RpoS, which has been associated with E. coli transformation, on natural transformation performed in an ＂open system＂. We find that RpoS is required for natural transformation but not to artificial transformation and RpoS mainly affect trans- formation in the liquid culture prior to plating. In the liquid culture, RpoS over-expression promotes natural transfor- mation in early exponential phase and static incubation accumulates RpoS and promotes transformation to a limited extent. These findings provide detailed understanding of RpoS function on natural transformation.

He believed that Eustacia' s tragedy resulted from the disagreement between her aspiration for a brilliant life outside Egdon Heath and the fate imposed on her by some mysterious force working at odds with her. This is what the paper attempts to prove.     

Empirical Research on User Acceptance of Mobile Searches

The mobile search, a combination of a web search engine and a mobile communication system, is viewed as the most influential application in the 3G era. Therefore, mobile search service providers are eager to know which factors most influence user acceptance of mobile searches. Based on the characteristics of mobile searches and a review of previous information technology acceptance research, this study integrates the task technology fit model and the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology model to develop a mobile search acceptance model and empirically tests this model. This study finds that, for mobile searches, the performance expectancy, social influence, and perceived cost all significantly influence use intention and the performance expectancy increases with the increasing user’s experience and higher task technology fit degree. The effort expectancy is found to not affect the use intention of mobile searches and the users’ gender does not have a significant moderating effect on the use intention. The results are then used to develop suggestions for mobile search providers to promote their application and development.

What are universities for?

Governments worldwide rightly regard universities as fundamental to the achievement of many national priorities. But it is the paper’s contention that many misunderstand their true benefit to society. Investments in universities are increasingly based on the belief that the science labs in particular of research-intensive universities can be the source of a continuous stream of people and ideas that will spawn innovative and fast growing companies to form the nexus of the knowledge-based economy. This belief is a source of misconceived policies that offer only ultimate disillusion. It is the totality of the university enterprise that is important, as the only place where that totality of ourselves and our world is brought together, and which makes it the strongest provider of the rational explanation and meaning that societies need. In research, universities create new possibilities; in teaching, they shape new people. Its graduates learn to seek the true meaning of things: to distinguish between the true and the merely seemingly true, to verify for themselves what is stable in that very unstable compound that often passes for knowledge. It is the complex, interacting whole of the university that is the source of the separate economic, social, cultural and utilitarian benefits valued by society. It needs to be understood, valued and managed as a whole. These perceptions are a direct challenge to not only to governments but to university administrators who have been either cowed or seduced into the slipshod thinking that is leading to demands that universities cannot satisfy, whilst obscuring their most important contributions. The challenge to both is to permit autonomy without oppressive accountability, and to give staff and students the freedom to think, speculate and research. These are the very conditions of the personal and collective creativity that are the sources of a university’s deepest benefits to its society.     

t-bit semiclassical quantum Fourier transform

Because of the difficulty of building a high-dimensional quantum register,this paper presents an implementation of the high-dimensional quantum Fourier transform(QFT)based on a low-dimensional quantum register.First,we define the t-bit semi- classical quantum Fourier transform.In terms of probability amplitude,we prove that the transform can realize quantum Fourier transformation,illustrate that the requirement for the two-qubit gate reduces obviously,and further design a quantum circuit of the transform.Combining the classical fixed-window method and the implementation of Shor’s quantum factorization algorithm,we then redesign a circuit for Shor’s algorithm,whose required computation resource is approximately equal to that of Parker’s.The requirement for elementary quantum gates for Parker’s algorithm is 3 O (logN),and the quantum register for our circuit re- quires t-1 more dimensions than Parker’s.However,our circuit is t2 times as fast as Parker’s,where t is the width of the window.

Urban Railway Accessibility

Effective use of urban rapid railway systems requires that the railway systems be effectively con-nected with other transportation modes so that they are accessible. This paper uses the logit model and data to analyze the factors influencing railway access choices in a railway choice access model. The results indicate that access time, access cost, and access distance are factors significantly affecting railway access choices. The user’s income significantly affects the probability of choosing to walk rather than to take a taxi, but is not related to choosing buses or bicycles. Vehicle ownership significantly affects the probability of choosing a taxi, but is not significantly related to the other modes. The conclusions provide an analysis tool for urban railway planning and construction.     

Semiotic Proposition for Understanding Semantics Within Construction Documents

This research develops a methodology that helps actors in understanding information generated from multiple construction participants. It employs semiotic theory which approaches the interpreter’s understanding of the role of the representations used in construction documents to communicate meanings to other participants. This strategy is designed to aid the interpreters’ comprehension of the use of symbols. The symbols within the construction documents are forms of representations that take the form of a visual representation of a set of markers that describe a formal language, and of markers that are used to represent natural language as well as other possible representations, such as a collection of codes for indexing documents. Symbols are replaced by signs under the semiotics theory. The use of symbols as signs is this study’s recognition of the relationship between the interpreter and the material quality of symbols. The semiotic analysis is an examination of the compromise between the meanings of a representation per se and the concept associated with the understanding of such representation.     

Elliptic curves in Huff’s model

In this paper,we present the generalized Huff curves that contain Huff’s model as a special case.First,it is proved that every elliptic curve with three points of order 2 is isomorphic to a generalized Huff curve.Then,the fast and explicit formulae are derived for generalized Huff curves in projective coordinates.This paper also enumerates the number of isomorphism classes of generalized Huff curves over finite fields.Finally,the explicit formulae are presented for the doubling step and addition step in Miller’s algorithm to compute the Tate pairing on generalized Huff elliptic curves.     

A new type of ice formation zone found in the Himalayas

Ice formation was studied on the Dasuopu Glacier located in the Mount Xixabangma (28°23′ N, 85°43'E) in the Himalayas. Snow pits and shallow ice cores are analyzed to reveal ice formation process. The results show that the ice formation process, or in other words, the process of densitifica-tion, on the col (7 000 m a.s. I.) of the Dasuopu Glacier is a stable, slow and gradual process. The snow-ice transformation on the glacier is estimated to be 30-40 m below the surface. The temperature on the Dasuopu Glacier is very low (～ - 14℃ at 10 m) and similar to that in polar type ice cap. We, therefore, speculate that the process of snow-ice transformation is undertaken under snow pressure, and that there is a percolation zone on the Dasuopu Glacier. The high altitude of the col and monsoon snow fall accompnied by heavy cloud and high albedo favorite the percolation zone formation.

A shortest path algorithm for moving objects in spatial network databases

One of the most important kinds of queries in Spatial Network Databases （SNDB） to support location-based services （LBS） is the shortest path query. Given an object in a network, e.g. a location of a car on a road network, and a set of objects of interests, e.g. hotels, gas station, and car, the shortest path query returns the shortest path from the query object to interested objects. The studies of shortest path query have two kinds of ways, online processing and preprocessing. The studies of preprocessing suppose that the interest objects are static. This paper proposes a shortest path algorithm with a set of index structures to support the situation of moving objects. This algorithm can transform a dynamic problem to a static problem. In this paper we focus on road networks. However, our algorithms do not use any domain specific information, and therefore can be applied to any network, This algorithm＇s complexity is O（klog2i）, and traditional Diikstra＇s comolexitv is O（（i ＋ k）^2）.
