Five recently discovered letters written by James Ferguson, FRS (1710–1776) while he was on a lecture tour in 1771 add substantially to what was previously known about his activities at that time. Together with newspaper advertisements and other correspondence, they not only enable his itinerary to be reconstructed in also reveal some of his own thoughts at the time and the difficulties that he had to contend with. On this particular tour, Ferguson was away from his London base for at least seven months, visiting Birmingham, Kidderminster, Worcester, Newcastle-under-Lyme, Cheadle (Staffs.), and Derby. During this period he delivered his course of 12 lectures on Experimental Philosophy at least eight times. Amongst the people that he met were Matthew Boulton, Josiah Wedgwood, and John Whitehurst, as well as the recipient of the letters, James Beresford of Bewdley, Worcestershire.

In this paper the opportunity has been taken to present also an outline of the gradual evolution of Ferguson's lecturing career, leading up to his situation in the 1770s, as much of the relevant source material now available was unknown to his nineteenth-century biographer, Ebenezer Henderson.  相似文献

Summary The butanol extracts from myelin fragments showing 5-HT binding capacity were studied by SDS-urea gel electrophoresis. 5 main bands were observed and their molecular weights were determined by the method of Ferguson relationship, and revealed that these extracts contained proteolipid protein, DM-20 and basic proteins. Furthermore, the reconstituted fraction with crude basic proteins and lipids showed the saturable binding capacity for C14·5-HT.Acknowledgment. We thank Prof. T. We have previously argued that historical cases must be rendered canonical before they can plausibly serve as evidence for philosophical claims, where canonicity is established through a process of negotiation among historians and philosophers of science (Bolinska and Martin, 2020). Here, we extend this proposal by exploring how that negotiation might take place in practice. The working stock of historical examples that philosophers tend to employ has long been established informally, and, as a result, somewhat haphazardly. The composition of the historical canon of philosophy of science is therefore path dependent, and cases often become stock examples for reasons tangential to their appropriateness for the purposes at hand. We show how the lack of rigor around the canonization of case studies has muddied the waters in selected philosophical debates. This, in turn, lays the groundwork for proposing ways in which they can be improved.  相似文献

A central issue in the philosophy of technology concerns the relationship between technology and the conditions under which technology develops. Traditionally, two main accounts are given of this relationship. The social constructivist approach considers technology to be largely determined by “social” factors (e.g. military interests, economic policy). By contrast, technological determinism describes technology as self-determinative, and as following its own independent aim of greater efficiency. This paper discusses two alternatives to these conceptions of technology, namely, the accounts offered by Bruno Latour and Martin Heidegger. It examines their common theses that our present misunderstanding of technology is due to a continued commitment to the subject–object distinction. The paper further compares their accounts, which attempt to overcome this distinction, and argues that ultimately both authors fail to find a role for human beings that is consistent with their contention that we need to develop a less anthropocentric understanding of the world.  相似文献

The first professors at the newly-established London University (later University College London) were appointed in 1827, but a chair in geology was not created there until 1841. In the intervening years, teaching in geology and palaeontology was included in other natural science courses. Early in 1831, John Phillips, keeper of the Yorkshire Museum at York, was prompted to give a formal course of geological lectures and subsequently he was informally offered the professorship, which he declined.  相似文献

Summary The major serum proteins of Dipteran larvae present something of an enigma. In many respects they are extremely well suited for studies on gene structure and control, protein chemistry and physiology. Large amounts of these proteins are synthesized by the fat body at specific stages of larval development, much is known about their biochemistry, genetics and evolution and some information is available about the control of their synthesis. There are however doubts as to their function. This article considers what is known about these proteins in Dipterans and other insect groups and relates this information to their evolution and their possible function.  相似文献

Summary Roman high-avoidance (RHA/Verh) rats, food-deprived (F-D) for 5 days, had higher stomach lesion scores than did F-D Roman low-avoidance (RLA/Verh) rats. F-D RLA/Verh rats which were injected i.p. with phenylbutazone (PBZ) 24 h before examination, however, had higher scores than did PBZ-treated, F-D RHA/-Verh rats. Histologically, extensive edema and cellular infiltration (including numerous erythrocytes) were seen below lesions, in the submucosa, denoting vascular damage. An attenuating influence of food on the ulcerogenic effects of PBZ, which were much more severe in F-D than in fed rats was also indicated.The authors thank K. Bättig and J. R. Summary Cellulose decomposition in paddy soil polluted by copper was determined by the use of polyethylene-backed absorbent paper (Benchkote) as a source of cellulose. It was shown that the paper is a suitable material for measuring the rate of cellulose decomposition. Correlations were found between copper content in the soil, the growth of rice plants and the cellulose decomposition rate.Acknowledgment. Gratitude is extend to Dr M.H. Well-known in his day, but overlooked since, Erasmus King lectured in natural and experimental philosophy from the 1730s until 1756 at his Westminster home and twenty other venues, publicizing his frequent courses exclusively in the Daily Advertiser. In 1739 he escorted Desaguliers's youngest son to Russia, hoping to demonstrate experimental philosophy to the Russian empress. En route, he conducted trials with a sea-guage in the Baltic which were reported by Stephen Hales in his Statical Essays. Various sources testify to King's subsequent experimental research for Hales in the fields of anatomy, respiration and electricity. There is recorded evidence for the exceptional range and quality of King's scientific apparatus and models.  相似文献

Subnational regional jurisdictions rarely have at their disposal a reasonable array of timely statistics to monitor their economic condition. In light of this, we develop a procedure that simultaneously estimates a quarterly time series for all regions of a country based upon quarterly national and annual regional data. While other such techniques exist, we suggest a temporal error structure that eliminates possible spurious jumps. Using our approach, regional analysts should now be able to distribute national growth among regions as soon as quarterly national figures are released. In a Spanish application, we detail some practicalities of the process and show that our proposal produces better estimates than the uniregional methods often used. Gelsolin superfamily proteins: key regulators of cellular functions   总被引:10,自引:0,他引:10  
Cytoskeletal rearrangement occurs in a variety of cellular processes and involves a wide spectrum of proteins. Among these, the gelsolin superfamily proteins control actin organization by severing filaments, capping filament ends and nucleating actin assembly [1]. Gelsolin is the founding member of this family, which now contains at least another six members: villin, adseverin, capG, advillin, supervillin and flightless I. In addition to their respective role in actin filament remodeling, these proteins have some specific and apparently non-overlapping particular roles in several cellular processes, including cell motility, control of apoptosis and regulation of phagocytosis (summarized in table 1). Evidence suggests that proteins belonging to the gelsolin superfamily may be involved in other processes, including gene expression regulation. This review will focus on some of the known functions of the gelsolin superfamily proteins, thus providing a basis for reflection on other possible and as yet incompletely understood roles for these proteins.  相似文献

Essay review     
Benjamin Franklin, the colonial American, maintained a now little-known interest in geological questions for more than sixty years. He began as a follower of English theorists, but soon assimilated some of their ideas with original speculations and discoveries, particularly regarding earthquakes. Though Franklin became famous for his experiments with electricity, he never attempted to explain earthquakes as if they were electrical phenomena; others, however, did. Through his access to American materials, Franklin contributed significantly to the work of several English and French geological theorists. Though some of his own theories were ultimately of limited value, Franklin played an important role in the international science of his time. In addition to his other accomplishments, he was colonial America's foremost student of geology.  相似文献

黄群藻目Synurales是主要根据光合色素和亚显微结构特征建立的一个目,也是淡水金藻中较大的一个目,包括约160种。该目的植物体为自由运动的单细胞或群体,细胞的表质上覆盖许多硅质的鳞片,以覆瓦状、甲胄状排列或自由附着于表质上,鳞片具刺毛或无,具1条或2条不等长鞭毛。黄群藻目植物区别于其它金藻植物的主要特征为,它们的色素体仅含有叶绿素C1,鞭毛基部平行排列,并且形成硅质鳞片的硅质沉积孢囊与叶绿体外膜相连。自建立至今,该目的分类系统几经变化。本文综述了黄群藻目分类系统的研究进展,并对其主要形态特征的分类价值进行了分析。  相似文献

Summary The in vitro labeled RNAs in the accessory glands from male adults, and in the salivary glands and fat body from developing larvae ofDrosophila melanogaster were separated on linear gradient acrylamide gels in formamide. The patterns appear to be tissue- and stage-specific, and several lines of evidence indicate that the visualized radioactive bands include both hnRNA and messages.Acknowledgments. One thing about technical artefacts that needs to be explained is how their physical make-up, or structure, enables them to fulfil the behaviour associated with their function, or, more colloquially, how they work. In this paper I develop an account of such explanations based on the familiar notion of mechanistic explanation. To accomplish this, I (1) outline two explanatory strategies that provide two different types of insight into an artefact’s functioning, and (2) show how human action inevitably plays a role in artefact explanation. I then use my own account to criticize other recent work on mechanistic explanation and conclude with some general implications for the philosophy of explanation.  相似文献

The targeting and anchoring of heterologous proteins and peptides to the outer surface of bacteriophages and cells is becoming increasingly important, and has been employed as a tool for fundamental and applied research in microbiology, molecular biology, vaccinology, and biotechnology. Less known are endospores or spores produced by some Gram-positive species. Spores of Bacillus subtilis are surrounded by a spore coat on their outside, and a few proteins have been identified being located on the outside layer and have been successfully used to immobilize antigens and some other proteins and enzymes. The major advantage of spores over the other published systems is their synthesis within the cytoplasm of the bacterial cell. Therefore, any heterologous protein to be anchored on the outside does not have to cross any membrane. Furthermore, spores are extremely resistant against high temperature, irradiation and many chemicals, and can be stored for many years at room temperature.  相似文献
