A new biopsy-tube for the small intestine

Zusammenfassung Beschreibung einer neuen Sonde, die sich für Dünndarmbiopsie eignet und bei der die verschiedenen Vorgänge bei der Biopsie einzeln reguliert werden können. Es wird über Ergebnisse bei 28 Patienten berichtet, wobei keinerlei Komplikationen auftraten. In jedem dieser Fälle konnte eine histologische Wertung durchgeführt werden.

Evidence from trade cards for the scientific instrument industry

Trade cards were a means of advertising products or services and thereby attracting customers to the owner's shop. They often included a variety of details about the proprietor and his business, and illustrated his wares. Cards for the scientific instrument industry depicted all classes of instrument and the products from which they were made. A careful study of the cards can reveal much supplementary information about the way the industry worked, so their use, and limitations, as a source of historical evidence is discussed in detail. Over sixty English trade cards from London and the provinces, covering the period 1670 to 1900, are illustrated (most of them previously unpublished). By careful analysis, it is shown that aesthetic style and type-face design, combined with written and pictorial content, may be used to deduce dates and business practices. Many small pieces of information gradually build a complex picture of an important and fascinating industry.     

A new synthesis of benzoyl phosphate: A substrate for acyl phosphatase assay

Summary A new method for the synthesis of benzoyl phosphate was reported. The advantages are: 1. more rapid procedure; 2. lower cost; 3. higher yield.This work was supported by grants from the Italian Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche and from the Ministero della Pubblica Istruzione.     

On the biogenesis of neoflavanoids: A new hypothesis

Zusammenfassung Eine neue Hypothese für die Biogenese der Neoflavanoide wird vorgeschlagen, indem dasselbe Chalkon als Zwischenstufe wie für die Flavanoide postuliert wird. Nach dieser Hypothese sollte sich nach Verabreichung von [3-¹⁴C]-Phenylalanin die Markierung an C-4 des Neoflavanoids befinden, wie es beim Calophyllolid⁶ tatsächlich der Fall ist.     

Brain chopping: A new method for the rapid removal of newborn rat brain

Summary A new multi-bladed air-driven guillotine is described. This device removes newborn rat heads and slices them into several thin wafers, which facilitates freezing and permits easy regional dissection.Supp. in part by U. S. Public Health Service Grant. AA-01391.     

Cross-linked arabinogalactan: A new affinity matrix for the purification ofRicinus communis lectins

Summary Arabinogalactan has been cross-linked to give a new high capacity affinity matrix for the purification ofRicinus communis lectins. It shows a capacity which is 50 times greater than that of the conventional affinity matrices.     

Automated specimen processing for electron microscopy: A new apparatus

Zusammenfassung Eine neue, einfache Maschine zur automatischen Entwässerung und Einbettung elektronen-mikroskopischer Präparate wird beschrieben. Bis zu 24 Präparate werden gleichzeitig in einer Wanne bewegt, deren Inhalt bis 29mal aus 10 verschiedenen Behältern entsprechend einem vorwählbaren Programm ausgewechselt wird. Die Maschine reproduziert zuverlässig und genau zahlreiche bisher von Hand ausgeführte Verfahren. Sie ist klein, einfach zu bedienen, kann über Nacht arbeiten und spart so viel Zeit.
