Summary The defensive secretions of 4 species of opilionids were analyzed.Leiobunum ventricosum andHadrobunus maculosus produce 4-methylheptan-3-one, whileL. calcar produces E-4,6-dimethyl-6-octen-3-one.L. longipes produces E-4,6-dimethyl-6-nonen-3-one, a new natural product.Paper No. 51 of the seriesDefensive Mechanisms of Arthropods.Acknowledgments. Defensive secretions (allomones) from first-instar nymphs of stink bugs in the subfamily Pentatominae contain (E)-4-oxo-2-decenal as a major constituent, whereas this compound is absent from later instars. In contrast, first instars ofEdessa meditabunda (Edessinae) produce allomones like those of later instars. The C6 and C8 (E)-4-oxo-2-alkenals are common, characteristic exocrine compounds of nymphal and adult Heteroptera, but (E)-4-oxo-2-decenal is previously unknown as a major natural product for which a biological role has yet to be established.  相似文献

Defensive steroids from a carrion beetle (Silpha americana)   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Summary The defensive anal effluent discharged bySilpha americana in response to disturbance contains a mixture of steroids stemming from a glandular annex of the rectum. The compounds have been characterized as 15-hydroxyprogesterone (1, principal component), 5-pregnan-15-ol-3, 20-dione (2), 5-pregnan-3, 15-diol-20-one (3), 5-pregnan-7, 15-diol-3,20-dione (4), 5-pregnan-3, 7, 15-triol-20-one (5), 5-pregnan-16-ol-3,20-dione (6), and 5-pregnan-3, 16-diol-20-one (7), none previously found in insects. Bioassays with jumping spiders showed compounds1 and6 to be feeding deterrents at the 1 g level.Paper No. 78 of the series: Defense Mechanisms of Arthropods. The widespread distribution of insects over many ecological niches is a testimony to their evolutionary success. The colonization of environments at high latitudes or altitudes required the evolution of biochemical strategies that reduced the impact of cold or freezing stress. This review focuses on our current interests in some of the genes and proteins involved in low temperature survival in insects. Although the most widespread form of protection is the synthesis of low molecular weight polyol cryoprotectants, proteins with intrinsic protective properties, such as the thermal hysteresis or antifreeze proteins are also important. These have been cloned and characterized in certain moths and beetles. Molecular techniques allowing the isolation of genes differentially regulated by low temperatures have revealed that heat shock proteins, cold stress proteins, membrane protectants, as well as ice nucleators and other less well characterized proteins likely also play a role in cold hardiness. Summary By means of hungry Triatomid bugs, samples of blood (40–200l) can be obtained from small mammals, such as bats, without causing any harm to the animals. The blood can be extracted from the gaster of the bug immediately after the bug has finished sucking. The method was successfully used for measuring the energy budget by the doubly labeled water method, and for obtaining material for lymphocyte cultures, and may prove useful in other fields, too.M. Volleth is very much obliged to Prof. Dr R. A. Pfeiffer for giving her the opportunity to work at the Institute of Human Genetics.  相似文献

Summary A mirid and a coreid, feeding on a variety of plant tissues, evacuated the contents of cells up to 3.5 mm from the furthest penetration of their mouthparts. A pectinase occurred in the salivary glands of the mirid and an invertase in those of the coreid, but not vice versa. Cells in the mirid lesions were apparently emptied while the walls retained their shape, whereas coreid lesions showed an immediate inward collapse of cell walls and engorgement of intercellular spaces.14 October 1986Work based on the Biology Department of the University of Papua New Guinea, to which I am grateful for provision of facilities. I am especially grateful to Dr Elaine Brough for arranging the contacts and visits that made field observations and collection of materials possible.  相似文献

Summary Males ofPodisus fretus (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) release a long-range attractant pheromone containing linalool (49.0%), (E)-2-hexenal (34.5%), benzyl alcohol (12.0%), nerolidol (2.0%),-terpineol (1.1%), and traces of several other compounds. The eastern yellowjacket,Vespula maculifrons (Hymenoptera: Vespidae), is attracted to artificial pheromones forP. fretus and for the sympatric species,Podisus maculiventris. The authors thank Mr T.J. Henry of the USDA Systematic Entomology Laboratory and Dr J.E. McPherson, Southern Illinois University, for examining the pentatomid species and Dr A.S. Menke, USDA-SEL, for determining the yellowjacket species. We also thank S. Wilzer for technical assistance.

Summary Anal pore-plates are a typical adult characteristic of male mealy bugs. Nymphs treated with a juvenile hormone-active insect growth regulator moult several times into intermediary forms between nymph and adult. The number of the anal pores is reduced during each of these supernumerary moults.Presented at the XVth International Congress of Entomology, Washington DC 1976.Acknowledgments. We wish to express our thanks to Sir Vincent B. Wigglesworth and Mr M. Gruber for revision of the text and to Mr M. Dickenmann and Mrs B. Mühlemann for technical assistance.  相似文献

Summary The blood of the Mexican bean beetle (Epilachna varivestis) contains a homotropane alkaloid, euphococcinine (1). The beetles reflex bleed when disturbed, thereby deploying the alkaloid, which is provenly deterrent to spiders and ants. Newly emerged adults lack the alkaloid, but the compound builds up to deterrent levels in their blood within days. Eggs and larvae ofEpilachna are devoid of the compound.Paper No 79 of the series: Defense Mechanisms of Arthropods. Study supported by NIH (Grants AI-02908 and AI-12020) and Hatch Funds (NYC-191409). We thank G. Eidens, K. Hicks, and M. Eisner for excellent technical help, and an anonymous reviewer for calling two critical references to our attention. The ant tests were done at the Archbold Biological Station, Lake Placid, Florida. The hospitality of the Fogarty Scholar-in-Residence Program (to J.M.) is acknowledged with pleasure.  相似文献
