Effect of acetylsalicylic acid on iron absorption in the rat

Summary The in vivo administration of⁵⁹Fe to the rat accompanied by acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) enhanced significantly counts in blood, spleen, liver and femur without affecting those of the intestine. The results suggest that ASA augments iron absorption either via an inhibitory action on the synthesis of prostaglandins or by a purely chemical mechanism.This work was supported by Grant No. 6638 from CONICET (Argentina).The technical assistance of Mrs María E. Effect of the calmodulin inhibitor R24571 (calmidazolium) on rat embryos cultured in vitro

Summary The possible effects of inhibition of the calcium-binding protein, calmodulin, on mammalian morphogenesis have been investigated by culturing rat embryos in vitro from 9 1/2 to 11 1/2 days of development in the presence of R24571 (calmidazolium), a specific inhibitor of calmoldulin. Embryos cultured in 10^–2 mM R24571 for 48 h show inhibited development and exhibit a range of morphogenetic abnormalities including assymetry and neural tube defects. Embryos exposed to R24571 for the first 24 h of a 48 h culture are more severely affected than embryos exposed to R24571 for the last 24 h.Acknowledgments. We wish to thank Mr C. (R)-(Z,E)-9,11-octadecadien-13-olide: An intriguing lactone fromHeliconius pachinus (Lepidoptera)

Summary A fourteen-membered lactone,(R)-(Z,E)-9,11-octadecadien-13-olide, was isolated from extruded abdominal glands of a Neotropical, nymphalid butterfly,Heliconius pachinus (Lepidoptera). This compound was obtained from mature adults of both sexes, but was not detected in young adults or pupae.     

Effect of imazalil (1-(2-(2,4-dichlorophenyl)-2-(2-propenyloxy) ethyl)-1H-imidazole) on biosynthesis of ergosterol in Penicillium expansum Link]

Imazalil is a new fungicide effective against Penicillium molds on fruits after harvest. This compound inhibits ergosterol biosynthesis in mycelia of Penicillium expansum. The accumulation of 24--methylenedithydrolanosterol, obtusifoliol and 14 alpha-methyl-delta 8, 24(28)-ergostadienol in treated fungi suggests that imazalil blocks sterol C--14 demethylation.

Summary A novel ether lipid, (-)-(R)-1-O-geranylgeranylglycerol (1), has been isolated from the brown alga Dilophus fasciola and its structure proved by spectroscopic methods and chemical degradation.This work was supported by CNR, Rome, Italy.     

Effect of the administration of (d-Ala)2methionine-enkephalin on the serotonin metabolism in rat brain

Summary The effect of cerebroventricular injection of [D-Alanine] methionine-enkephalin (DALA), a synthetic analog of met-enkephalin, on the serotonergic system of rat brain has been studied. This opioid peptide caused an increase in 5HT turnover which was particularly evident in the limbic forebrain. This effect was completely antagonized by naloxone pretreatment.Acknowledgments. Effect of prostaglandin E2 (PgE2) on the biosynthesis and metabolism of noradrenaline (NA) in the isolated and perfused rabbit heart]

In isolated perfused rabbit heart, Pg E2 at concentrations ranging from 1.10(-8) to 1.10(-4) M has shown no significant action either on the biosynthesis or on the metabolism of NA. But it inhibited NA uptake, nevertheless this action was weak.

Influence of prostaglandins E1 and E2 on coagulation of rat blood

Zusammenfassung Die Prostaglandine E₁ (PGE₁) und E₂ (PGE₂) haben keinen Einfluss auf die Gerinnung von Rattenblut. Im Gegensatz zu früheren Postulationen können die Ca-Ionen im Plasma nicht von PGE₁ ersetzt werden. PGE₁ beeinflusst die maximale Amplitude des Thrombelastogramms in vitro nach Zugabe von 0.3–6 g/ml, während PGE₂ diesen Effekt nicht aufweist.
