Interstrain variation of murine arylsulfatase C

Summary A method has been developed for the assay of arylsulfatase C in tissue extracts containing arylsulfatases A and B. Significant variation of enzyme activity was observed among 26 inbred murine strains. Activity differences were apparent at all stages evaluated between 1 and 70 days postnatal age. Arylsulfatase C from representative high- and low-activity strains exhibited similar Michaelis constants, temperature optima, pH optima, thermostabilities and inhibitor profiles.This work was supported in part by Biomedical Sciences Support Grant: HEW PHS RR 07030.     

Immunofluorescent antibody studies of a murine leukemia virus: Comparison of human,bovine and murine systems

Zusammenfassung Antikörper bei genesenden Mäusen nach Infektion mit Leukämie-Viren (S-63) erzeugt, zeigen eine Kreuzreaktion mit den Leukämie-Antigenen aus Rinder- und Menschenserum und Gewebe. Diese Befunde sprechen dafür, dass die Viren-Antigene in den drei Systemen sehr ähnlich sind.

Intracellular behaviour of Leishmania enriettii within murine macrophages

Both promastigotes and amastigotes of Leishmania enriettii were readily ingested by mouse peritoneal macrophages (MPM). Promastigotes after their entry within MPM were rapidly immobilized and their multiplication was never observed. Microscopic examination revealed that ingested promastigotes were degraded with MPM. Nonmotile amastigotes of L. enriettii taken up by MPM, on the other hand, multiplied intracellularly and eventually destroyed the infected cells.     

Role of hepcidin in murine brain iron metabolism

Brain iron homeostasis is maintained by a balance of both iron uptake and release, and accumulating evidence has revealed that brain iron concentrations increase with aging. Hepcidin, an iron regulatory hormone produced by hepatocytes in response to inflammatory stimuli, iron, and hypoxia, has been shown to be the long-sought hormone responsible for the regulation of body iron balance and recycling in mammals. In this study, we report that hepcidin is widely expressed in the murine brain. In cerebral cortex, hippocampus and striatum, hepcidin mRNA levels increased with aging. Injection of hepcidin into the lateral cerebral ventricle resulted in decreased Fpn1 protein levels in cerebral cortex, hippocampus, and striatum. Additionally, treatment of primary cultured neurons with hepcidin caused decreased neuronal iron release and Fpn1 protein levels. Together, our data provide further evidence that hepcidin may be involved in the regulation of brain iron metabolism.

Treatment of spontaneous murine lymphomas with syngeneic lymphoid cells

Syngeneic thymus grafts and spleen cells were administered to thymectomized and intact (C57BL/1XA)F1 mice with spontaneous lymphomas. Their life span was prolonged significantly compared to untreated tumor-bearing controls. Dramatic clinical and histologic evidence of tumor regression was observed.     

Retardation of murine viral leukemogenesis by prolonged antigenic stimulation

Zusammenfassung Die Mortalität an Leukämie bei BALB/c-Mäusen wurde durch wöchentliche i.p. Injektionen mit menschlichen Erythrozyten herabgesetzt, wenn sie während 8 Monaten vor der Impfung mitRauscher-Leukämievirus vorbehandelt waren. 7 Monate nach der Virusinfektion zeigten 20% dieser Mäuse keine Zeichen von Leukämie. Kontrollversuche mit der gleichen Serie von Injektionen von Ochsenserumalbumin zeigten keinen Schutz.     

Comparative studies of murine anionic and cationic arylsulfatase B

Summary Murine brain possesses an anionic form of arylsulfatase B which accounts for approximately 12–16% of nonmicrosomal arylsulfatase activity. This isozyme is antigenically similar to cationic arylsulfatase B, displays a similar developmental profile, and can be converted to a form resembling the cationic species by prior treatment with neuraminidase.This research was supported in part by National Institutes of Health Grant: GM 27707.
