Ultrastructural visualization of Cabot rings in pernicious anemia.

Using the ammoniacal silver stain, Cabot rings were identified in peripheral blood erythrocytes from patients with severe untreated pernicious anemia. Ultrastructural studies of these erythrocytes showed silver deposits in partial loops and figure-eight forms, indicating that arginine rich histone may be a prominent component of the Cabot ring.     

Hypercalcitonemia in pernicious anemia

Summary Gastrin has been suggested as a natural secretogogue of the hormone calcitonin. We have found hypercalcitonemia in 55% of patients with pernicious anemia, and the gastrin levels, although usually increased, did not correlate.     

Ultrastructural study of vanadocytes in Ascidia malaca

Summary The ultrastructural aspects of vanadocytes, found in the circulating blood of Ascidia malaca, were studied in formaline-fixed material. The results indicate that the diverse morphological aspects of vanadophores reported here, are probably concerned with different metabolic stages of vanadine.This work was supported by a grant from the University of Naples at the Zoological Station of Naples.     

Genetic visualization of notch signaling in mammalian neurogenesis

Notch signaling plays crucial roles in fate determination and the differentiation of neural stem cells in embryonic and adult brains. It is now clear that the notch pathway is under more complex and dynamic regulation than previously thought. To understand the functional details of notch signaling more precisely, it is important to reveal when, where, and how notch signaling is dynamically communicated between cells, for which the visualization of notch signaling is essential. In this review, we introduce recent technical advances in the visualization of notch signaling during neural development and in the adult brain, and we discuss the physiological significance of dynamic regulation of notch signaling.     

Ultrastructural study of patch-graft re-endothelialization

Summary On the 8th post-operative day, an endothelial layer covers the venous patch luminal part when the adventitia of the patch is sutured to a 5–8 mm-long arteriotomy performed in the common carotid of the rat. The probable origin of this secondary endothelium is discussed.Supported by a grant from Banco Urquijo, Madrid, Spain.     

Hb F in sickle cell anemia

We have reviewed the methodology for an accurate quantitation of Hb F in the blood of patients with sickle cell anemia, values observed in hundreds of patients of different (racial or ethnic) backgrounds and with differences in severity of the disease, and the various factors that affect the level of Hb F. The latter include sex, age, genetic background or chromosomal haplotypes, variations in the sequences of the locus control region(s) 5 to the -globin gene, and the presence of an chain deficiency or -thalassemia. Finally, a few remarks about agents effective in increasing the in vivo Hb F synthesis are also included.     

Fluorophores as visualization aides in agar growth media

Summary A survey of 26 fluorophores revealed 5 which were non-inhibitory toStaphylococcus aureus andEscherichia coli and produced low background and high colony fluorescence.     

Ultrastructural localization of acid phosphatase in the yeastCryptococcus neoformans

Résumé La localisation de la phosphatase-acide dans la levureCryptococcus neoformans est étudiée ici par des méthodes cytochimiques au niveau ultrastructural. On a trouvé que l'enzyme se concentrait exclusivement dans les vacuoles, ce qui s'accorde avec les résultats que d'autres auteurs ont obtenus sur la localisation de l'enzyme dans les cellules végétales.

Ultrastructural localization of vanadium in the blood cells of Ascidiacea

Summary X-ray histospectrographic analysis at the scanning and transmission electron microscope (STEM) are made on the blood cells ofPhallusia mamillata Cuvier andCiona intestinalis, to study the direct intracellular sites of accumulation of vanadium. The results show a clear accumulation of vanadium on the membrane and in the granules of vacuoles of amebocytes, signet ring cell, compartment cell and traces of metal in the vanadophores of vanadocytes.We thank Dr C. Ultrastructural changes in uterine myometrium of mice with experimentally-induced adenomyosis

Summary Ectopic pituitary transplantation induced a high incidence of adenomyosis in SHN mice. Early signs of the development of adenomyosis were the penetration of stromal connective tissue into myometrium followed by uterine gland invasion. Ultrastructural correlation of water reabsorption in isolated rat cauda epididymidis

Summary Electron microscopic study was made on the water reabsorption of the epithelial cells of the rat cauda epididymidis. It was shown that when the epididymal duct was reabsorbing water at a maximal rate, widely dilated intercellular spaces were seen. It is suggested that the standing gradient model of water reabsorption first proposed for the gall bladder may also operate in the cauda epididymidis.This work was supported in part by the World Health Organization and grant number 158/254 of Hong Kong University.
