Defensive substances of opilionids

Naphthoquinone derivatives from the fungusHendersonula toruloidea

Summary 2 yellow naphthoquinone derivatives were isolated from several pathogenic strains ofHendersonula toruloidea Nattrass. They were identified as 2,7-dimethoxy-6-ethyl-5-hydroxy-1,4-naphthoquinone and 2,7-dimethoxy-5-hydroxy-6-(1-acetoxyethyl)-1,4-naphthoquinone by means of physico-chemical methods.Thanks are due to Mr A.J.M. van Beijnen, Laboratory for Organic Chemistry, State University of Utrecht, for optical rotation measurements.The authors are indebted to Mr C. Benzoyl cyanide in the defensive secretion of polydesmoid millipeds

Summary A novel cyanogenetic compound, benzoyl cyanide, was isolated from the defensive secretion of 3 polydesmoid millipeds (Pseudopolydesmus serratus, Apheloria corrugata and A. trimaculata). The secretion of the 3 species also contains mandelonitrile and benzaldehyde, and that of P. serratus contains mandelonitrile benzoate, benzoic acid, isovaleric acid, myristic acid and stearic acid.Paper No. 52 of the series Defense Mechanisms of Arthropods.The study was supported in part by the National Institutes of Health (grants AI-12020 and AI-02908 and Fellowship 1-F-32-CA05139 to T. Temperature variation and the function of complement and antibody of amphibia

Summary Temperature treatment of sera of erythrocyte immunized adults of 3 amphibian species has shown that cooling enhances antigen-antibody complexing and does not alter complement function in vitro. These findings bear on understanding in vivo temperature immunosuppression in poikilotherms.This research was partially supported by a grant No. AI-12846 from the National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, Md, USA. Solacasine,a new steroidal alkaloid fromSolanum pseudocapsicum possessing antimicrobial activity

Summary Systematic fractionation of alcohol extracts ofSolanum pseudocapsicum. showed that solacasine is the main antibacterial constituent. Summary 4-Isothiocyanato-4-nitrodiphenylamine possessed anthelmintic activity againstNippostrongylus dubius andHymenolepis nana in mice andH. diminuta in rats as determined by both egg counts and recovery of parasites at autopsy. Interaction between fluorescent-labeled ACTH1–24 isolated fat cells,and serum albumin

Summary Part or all of the difference in the ability of ACTH_1–24 and a fluorescent-labeled ACTH_1–24 to activate lipolysis in fat cells can be accounted for by label-related binding to albumin present in the assay medium.Acknowledgments. Inhibited hormonal induction of hepatic phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase in poly I∶C treated mice,an endotoxin-like glucocorticoid antagonism

Summary Corticosteroid induction of mouse hepatic phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase was inhibited by prior injection of poly IC. Mice challenged with a lethal dose of endotoxin 4 h after administration of poly IC could not be protected by a concurrent injection of hydrocortisone.This investigation was supported by U. S. The effect of methaqualone on prenatal development in the rat

Der Polymorphismus beruht auf 2 Allelen mit übereinstimmenden Frequenzen im Hardy-Weinberg-Gleichgewicht.

Influence of 2-methyl-2-(p-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-1-naphthylphenoxy)propionic acid on the oxidation of cholesterol by rat liver mitochondria

Zusammenfassung Es wird gezeigt, dass bei männlichen Wistar-Ratten im 3-Wochen-Diätexperiment mit Zusatz von 0,3% 2-Methyl-2-(p-1,2,3,4-Tetrahydro-1-naphthylphenoxy)-Propionsäure (Su-13437) die Oxydation von 26-¹⁴C-Cholesterin zu¹⁴CO₂ durch Lebermitochondrien (bezogen auf mg/N) ähnlich wie bei den Kontrollen war. Bei den Versuchstieren war jedoch bei Abwesenheit von Cytosol im System die Oxydation durch Lebermitochondrien erhöht.

Subcellular localization ofO-acetylserine sulfhydrylase in spinach leaves

Summary A combination of differential centrifugation and isopycnic sucrose density gradient centrifugation of extracts from spinach leaves (Spinacia oleracea L.) shows that about 20% of the O-Acetylserine sulfhydrylase are associated with chloroplasts. No appreciable amounts of O-Acetylserine sulfhydrylase band with mitochondrial and peroxisomal marker enzymes.This work was supported in part by the Swiss National Foundation (SNF), grant No. 3.610-0.75.     

Development of malaria parasites in mosquitoes fed with ookinetes suspended in defined media

Information concerning the specific nutritional requirements of malarial parasites developing in the mosquito host has been difficult to obtain, owing primarily to the complex nature of the blood meal that accompanies the parasites and the lack of success in culturing the complete invertebrate cycle ofPlasmodium in vitro. The present report describes a blood-free system for infecting mosquitoes with ookinetes ofPlasmodium berghei and for allowing the latter to develop into infective sporozoites. Ookinetes cultured in vitro were separated from blood proteins, suspended in defined medium, and fed toAnopheles stephensi mosquitoes through a membrane. The mosquitoes were then maintained on the same defined medium plus 5% sucrose. Infectivity of the parasites was demonstrated 17–19 days later by intracardial inoculation of the macerated mosquitoes into hamsters. This system makes it possible to evaluate nutritional factors that affect parasite development in the mosquito host under controlled conditions.This project was supported, in part, by the Public Health Service research grant AI-18345 from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases to Prof. K. Effects of palytoxin on the electrical activity of dog and rabbit heart

Summary Reversible effects of palytoxin, extracted from colonies of the soft coralPalythoa caribaeorum, are described. There is a decrease of both membrane resting potential and overshoot during activity. Rise time of the action potential is prolonged, while repolarization is shortened. Uptake of ferritin from the medium byTokophrya infusionum

Summary Tokophrya infusionum, a suctorian, is deprived of a mouth opening. The uptake of ferritin from the medium is accomplished through pits, invaginations of the plasma membrane which are permanent structures. Intermolecular and intramolecular isotope effects in the deamination of putrescine catalyzed by diamine oxidase

Summary The enzymatic deamination of 1,4-diaminobutane (putrescine) catalyzed by hog kidney diamine oxidase was studied with the aid of deuterium labeled substrates and mass spectrometry. An intermolecular deuterium isotope effect for the deamination of putrescine labeled with deuterium in all 4 alpha positions was observed to be 1.26. 1,4-Diaminobutane-1, 1-d₂ was synthesized and intramolecular isotope effects determined. The preference of diamine oxidase for the unlabeled alpha position was about 4 times greater than for the deuterated methylene. This work shows that intramolecular deuterium isotope effects are observable in enzyme systems other than cytochrome P-450.Acknowledgment.
