Effect of indole-3-acetic acid on the kinetics of horseradish peroxidase catalyzed scopoletin oxidation

Summary The kinetics of horseradish peroxidase catalyzed scopoletin oxidation were observed to be sigmoidal. The apparent K_ms for scopoletin is 0.9 mM. Inhibition of scopoletin oxidation by indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) appears to be non competitive. Non competitive inhibition by IAA suggests a more significant role of the peroxidase protein matrix in regulating the activity of the heme moiety.     

Vagal afferent innervation of the pylorus and the uper small intestine studied in the rat with the horseradish peroxidase technique

Summary The neuronal tracer horseradish peroxidase was injected into different segments of the gastrointestinal in the rat, in order to study the vagal afferent innervation. In the nodose ganglia the extent of labeling was greater in the experiments on the gastric antrum and pylorus than in the experiments on the first part of the small intestine. Vagal afferents are scarce in the upper doudenum and originate mainly from the left nodose ganglion.

The effect of noradrenaline on heat production in the new-born pig

Résumé La production de chaleur, la température du corps et du QR de 6 porcelets âgés de 4 à 13 jours, avant et après l'injection s.c. de noradrénaline (200 g/kg) ont été déterminées. On n'a pas constaté l'effet de l'injection de noradrénaline sur les animaux de 4–6 jours, pendant que le métabolisme et la température du rectum des porcelets âgés de 11–13 jours augmentaient distinctement, et que la valeur du QR a baissait significativement.

The effect of bradykinin on blood flow and heat production in the myocardium

Résumé En utilisant comme méthode la calorimétrie interne, nous avons montré que la bradykinine synthétique abaisse la résistance vasculaire dans le myocarde du lapin, du chat et du singe, même à doses aussi réduites que 0,05 µg/kg. Des doses plus fortes (5 µg/kg) augmentent aussi l'activité métabolique du myocarde.

Summary Retrograde axonal transport of horseradish peroxidase (HRP) was applied to the ventral surface of the cat stomach. We investigated the number, size and distribution of HRP-positive cells in spinal ganglia. The unexpected finding was the wide distribution of these cells from T3 down to L3. This would result in a diffuse pattern of referred pain.

The effect of heat on rat pineal hydroxyindole-O-methyl transferase activity

Summary Exposure of adult male rats to continuously elevated temperature of 32–34°C caused a significant decrease of HIOMT activity involved in the specific metabolic process of production of melatonin, considered an active pineal hormone. The effect was already evident after 24 h exposure and increased further during the next 48 h. The results obtained substantiate previous data that the pineal gland may be involved in the system regulating adaptation to extreme temperature changes.Acknowledgment. The effect of chronic heat stress on cortisol levels in the antarctic fishPagothenia borchgrevinki

Radioimmunoassay was used to determine levels of the stress-inducible glucocorticoid, cortisol, circulating in the plasma of the extremely stenothermal Antarctic fishPagothenia borchgrevinki at rest and after heat stress. Fish sampled immediately after capture (–1.9°C) had low cortisol levels (10.4±1.4 ng ml^–1, mean±SEM) as did fish which were laboratory rested for 3 days. Sudden exposure to 5°C (48h) resulted in a peak cortisol value after 3 h (69.9±6.8 ng ml^–1) whereas exposure to 8°C (6h) resulted in a peak value after 1 h (73.5±8.0 ng ml^–1). At both temperatures levels remained significantly elevated (p<0.05) for the entire period of exposure. Increased temperature also resulted in a significant change in haemoglobin, haematocrit and mean cell haemoglobin concentration (MCHC) (p<0.05). Plasma lactate was significantly elevated only after exposure to 8°C (p<0.05). Plasma cortisol levels fromP. borchgrevinki are reported here for the first time and show this cryopelagic Antarctic species to have an unusual hormonal stress profile.     

A contribution on the effect of noradrenaline on heat production in mice

Zusammenfassung Bei ausgewachsenen Mäusen wurde nach i.p. Noradrenalininjektion die Steigerung der O₂-Aufnahme über den Grundumsatz in der Thermoneutralzone verfolgt. Nach einer Dosis von 1,6 mg/kg wurde ein bedeutender Unterschied (p < 0,05) der O₂-Aufnahmesteigerung zwischen der Gruppe normaler (155%) und normaler, auf 17°C adaptierter Mäuse (165%) und der Gruppe haarloser Mäuse (195%) festgestellt.
