On the chemical nature of the heat-stable exotoxin ofBacillus thuringiensis

Zusammenfassung Das hitzestabile Exotoxin vonBacillusthuringiensis — auf Insekten spezifisch toxisch wirkend — wurde aus dem Kulturmedium angereichert und stark gereinigt. Sämtliche toxischen Fraktionen zeigen ein Absorptionsmaximum bei 258–260 nm, ein Absorptionsminimum bei 232–234 nm und eine positive Aldopentosereaktion. Bei der toxischen Substanz scheint es sich um ein Nucleosid oder Nucleotid des Adenins oder Uracils zu handeln.     

Oxidative phosphorylation and nitrogen fixation by cell-free extracts of the azotobacter

Zusammenfassung Zellfreie Extrakte vonAzotobacter vinelandii O wurden auf ihr Vermögen zur oxydativen Phosphorylierung und Stickstoffixierung untersucht. Obwohl alle Präparate die Fähigkeit zur oxydativen Phosphorylierung besassen und einige davon in der Lage waren Stickstoff zu fixieren, konnte zwischen den beiden Vorgängen — unter den geschilderten experimentellen Bedingungen — keine Abhängigkeit gefunden werden.

Riassunto L'occhio composto diSchistocerca gregaria Forsk., adattato al buio, è sede di un effetto « facilitatore » in seguito al primo stimolo luminoso; infatti la risposta elettroretinografica al secondo stimolo — purchè l'intervallo fra i due non superi i due minuti — presenta una latenza più breve e una ampiezza e una velocità di salita del potenziale più grandi. L'effetto descritto si verifica, con tutta probabilità, a livello delle cellule fotorecettrici.     

Catalysis and inhibition of the oxidative degradation of deoxyribonucleic acid by catalase showing maximum catalytic effect in pico-molar concentrations

Zusammenfassung Es wird gezeigt, dass eine 2·10^–12 molare Katalase-Lösung den durch Luftsauerstoff sowie durch ein Wasserstoffperoxid-lieferndes Cytostaticum bewirkten — nicht aber den durch zugesetztes Wasserstoff-peroxid verursachten — Abbau von Desoxyribonucleinsäure (DNS) wesentlich verstärkt. Mitsteigender Katalase-Konzentration wird dieser Effekt immer kleiner und verschwindet schliesslich. Im Falle des Cytostaticums wird der DNS-Abbau durch Katalase-Konzentrationen über 10^–11 M/1 inhibitiert. Dieser Übergang von Katalyse zu Inhibition wird auf die Fähigkeit der Katalase zu peroxydatischer bzw. häminkatalytischer Wirkung einerseits und zu katalatischer Wirkung andererseits zurückgeführt, wobei mit steigender Katalase-Konzentration eine Verschiebung zugunsten der katalatischen Reaktion erfolgt.

Summary C. auronitens has 26 autosomes (2n), from which one pair — calledA-chromosomes — is relatively long.A-chromosomes consist of an euchromatic and a heterochromatic arm. In 63% of the individuals, theA-chromosomes are intraindividually anisomorph with regard to the length of their heterochromatic arm. According to its length, this arm shows 0–3 secondary constrictions. Hence there are at least 4 different forms of theA-chromosome.

Résumé La morphologie du chromosomeX humain pendant la prophase I — comparable à celle qui a été décrite pour 8 espèces de primates — suggère l'existence d'un «crossing over» dans le chromosomeX de l'homme, du à un dédoublement possible de ce chromosome, résultant du transfer d'un autosome sur son homologue. Ce serait l'origine des chromosomes sexuels de typeX-Y dans les mammifères.     

In the tracks of the historicist movement: Re-assessing the Carnap-Kuhn connection

Thirty years after the publication of Thomas Kuhn's The Structure of Scientific Revolutions, sharp disagreement persists concerning the implications of Kuhn's ‘historicist’ challenge to empiricism. I discuss the historicist movement over the past thirty years, and the extent to which the discourse between two branches of the historical school has been influenced by tacit assumptions shared with Rudolf Carnap's empiricism. I begin with an examination of Carnap's logicism — his logic of science — and his 1960 correspondence with Kuhn. I focus on problems in the analysis applied to the unit of meta-scientific study or appraisal, arguing for a re-assessment of historicist treatment of the internal/external distinction and historiographic meta-methodology. The critique of objectivism and relativism that eventuates from this re-assessment is a double-edged blade, undercutting both objectivist and relativist treatments of cognitive evaluation and scientific change. I use it to cut across an otherwise diverse group of historicist-influenced writers, including Imre Lakatos, Larry Laudan, H.M. Collins and Stephen Stich.     

Atomism, Poincaré and Planck

Planck's change in attitude to the question of whether atomic hypotheses were scientifically accessible, is discussed. It is argued contra Holton, that Planck's change in attitude to this question did not signal a methodological shift towards realism. The point of doing this is not just to investigate a significant episode in the history of quantum theory, but also to use the episode as a case study in support of a broader historical thesis. This thesis is that there was a widespread late-nineteenth century methodological tradition which motivated the change in status of certain ontological claims — e.g., that atoms exist — from ‘inaccessible to science’ to ‘scientifically acceptable’ even though those claims were not strictly ‘observable’. This methodological tradition is a hybrid of positivist and realist views. Thus, contrary to one popular view, the fin de siécle triumph of atomism is not to be seen as a triumph for a realist view of science Poincare's views are also used as an illustration.     

Influence on central nervous system of 3-(p-propionyl-o-methoxy-phenoxy)-1,2-propanediol

Zusammenfassung Die hauptsächlichsten pharmakologischen Eigenschaften von 3-(p-Propionyl-o-methoxy-phenoxy)-1,2-propandiol (DA 1128) werden beschrieben. Wie Mephenesin zeigt DA 1128 eine beträchtliche depressorische Wirkung auf das Z.N.S. Das neue Arzneimittel jedoch zeigt — in Abweichung von Mephenesin — nur eine schwache paralytische Wirkung und eine geringe muskelrelaxierende Wirkung, ist weniger toxisch und besitzt keine hämolytische Wirkung. DA 1128 wird bei Versuchstieren rasch resorbiert.

Summary Tyramine enhanced the production of acetoin from pyruvate in rat liver homogenates. A stimulation of acetoin synthesis was only observed, when tyramine was oxidized during the incubation. Tyrosol (p-hydroxyphenylethanol) stimulated acetoin synthesis whereasp-hydroxyphenylacetic acid and ammonia were ineffective.

‘Conservative prejudice’ in the debate over disjunctively distributed life forms

During the thirties and forties, and early fifties, Wegener's ideas were generally rejected as a fantasy—fascinating but false. ‘Ein Machen, a pipe dream, a beautiful fairy story’ chanted the American bandwagon. During these decades of repudiation, arguments which denied continental dispersion passed without scrutiny or test. They were correct a priori because everybody knew that continental drift was wrong.     

Hydroxyproline production in chick fibroblast cultures

Zusammenfassung Kulturen von Hühnerherzfibroblasten wurden nach 10, 21 und 28 Tagenin vitro auf ihren Gehaltan Hydroxyprolin — einer wichtigen Aminosäure des Kollagens — untersucht. Nach 10, bzw. 21 Tagen ist eine signifikante, durch Prolinzugaben nicht beeinflussbare Vermehrung des zu 50% löslichen Hydroxyprolins feststellbar.

Rehabilitating theory: refusal of the ‘bottom-up’ construction of scientific phenomena

In this paper I inquire into Bogen and Woodward’s (1988) data/phenomena distinction, which in a similar way to Cartwright’s construal of the model of superconductivity (1995)—although in a different domain—argues for a ‘bottom-up’ construction of phenomena from data without the involvement of theory. I criticise Bogen and Woodward’s account by analysing their melting point of lead example in depth, which is usually cited in the literature to illustrate the data/phenomenon distinction. Yet, the main focus of this paper lies on Matthias Kaiser’s (1995) case study of the plate tectonic revolution, the most extensive case study that has been put forth to support the bottom-up construction of phenomena. On the basis of new historical evidence, which has been overlooked not only by Kaiser but also by the entire historical literature on the plate tectonic revolution, I demonstrate that phenomena are not constructed from the bottom-up but rather, admittedly counter-intuitively, from the top-down.     

Explaining Leibniz equivalence as difference of non-inertial appearances: Dis-solution of the Hole Argument and physical individuation of point-events

“The last remnant of physical objectivity of space–time” is disclosed in the case of a continuous family of spatially non-compact models of general relativity (GR). The physical individuation of point-events is furnished by the autonomous degrees of freedom of the gravitational field (viz., the Dirac observables) which represent—as it were—the ontic part of the metric field. The physical role of the epistemic part (viz. the gauge variables) is likewise clarified as embodying the unavoidable non-inertial aspects of GR. At the end the philosophical import of the Hole Argument is substantially weakened and in fact the Argument itself dissolved, while a specific four-dimensional holistic and structuralist view of space–time (called point-structuralism) emerges, including elements common to the tradition of both substantivalism and relationism. The observables of our models undergo real temporal change: this gives new evidence to the fact that statements like the frozen-time character of evolution, as other ontological claims about GR, are model dependent.     

Immunocytochemical localization of hyperglycemic hormone (HGH) in the neurosecretory system of the eyestalk of the crayfishAstacu leptodactylus

Summary Hyperglycemic hormone (HGH) fromAstacus leptodactylus can be visualized by an immunocytochemical procedure using a specific antiserum against HGH and the peroxidase-anti-peroxidase (PAP) method. HGH containing cells are localized in the most distal portion of the x-organ in the medulla terminalis. Their cell diameter is about 47±7 m; the nucleus measures about 22±2 m. They form a subgroup of neurosecretory cell type 1, already described for the crayfish. A large amount of this HGH material is homogeneously stored in the sinus gland. A group of fibres in the x-organ — sinus gland — tractus can be followed, due to their positive reaction with the PAP-reagent.
