The London and Bauer monograph occupies a central place in the debate concerning the quantum measurement problem. Gavroglu has previously noted the influence of Husserlian phenomenology on London's scientific work. However, he has not explored the full extent of this influence in the monograph itself. I begin this paper by outlining the important role played by the monograph in the debate. In effect, it acted as a kind of ‘lens’ through which the standard, or Copenhagen, ‘solution’ to the measurement problem came to be perceived and, as such, it was robustly criticized, most notably by Putnam and Shimony. I then spell out the Husserlian understanding of consciousness in order to illuminate the traces of this understanding within the London and Bauer text. This, in turn, yields a new perspective on this ‘solution’ to the measurement problem, one that I believe has not been articulated before and, furthermore, which is immune to the criticisms of Putnam and Shimony. 相似文献

Over many years, Aharonov and co-authors have proposed a new interpretation of quantum mechanics: the two-time interpretation. This interpretation assigns two wavefunctions to a system, one of which propagates forwards in time and the other backwards. In this paper, I argue that this interpretation does not solve the measurement problem. In addition, I argue that it is neither necessary nor sufficient to attribute causal power to the backwards-evolving wavefunction and thus its existence should be denied, contra the two-time interpretation. Two inter-linked theses are defended in this paper. One is the Duhemian theme that a rigid distinction between physical and chemical properties cannot be upheld. Duhem maintained this view not because the latter are reducible to the former, but because if physics is to remain consistent with chemistry it must prove possible to expand it to accommodate new features, and a rigid distinction would be a barrier to this process. The second theme is that naturally occurring isotopic variants of water are in fact distinct substances, and naturally occurring samples of water are mixtures of these substances. For most practical purposes it is convenient to treat protium oxide, deuterium oxide, and so on, as the same chemical substance, but to insist on this as a matter of principle would stand in conflict with the first thesis. 相似文献

Tissue-specific progenitor cells are characterized by proliferation and differentiation, but, in contrast to embryonic stem (ES) cells, have limited capacities for self-renewal and no tumourigenic potential. These latter traits make progenitor cells an ideal source for regenerative cell therapies. In this review, we describe what is currently known about nestin, an intermediate filament first identified in neuroepithelial stem cells. During embryogenesis, nestin is expressed in migrating and proliferating cells, whereas in adult tissues, nestin is mainly restricted to areas of regeneration. We show that nestin is abundant in ES-derived progenitor cells that have the potential to develop into neuroectodermal, endodermal and mesodermal lineages. Although it remains unclear what factors regulate in vitro and in vivo expression of nestin, we conclude that nestin represents a characteristic marker of multi-lineage progenitor cells and suggest that its presence in cells may indicate multi-potentiality and regenerative potential. 相似文献

Geodesy—the determination of the size and shape of the earth—has often been the science operating at the frontier of precision in the measurement of length. Its contribution to the technologies and standards of length measurement has, however, been underestimated in the literature. That, instead, places emphasis on the on the creation and international acceptance of the metric system as a whole. By new research into the standards-in-use of the community of geodesists, I rediscover the original purpose of the Metre Convention of 1875, and show for the first time the significant influence of geodesy on the standardisation of length measurement thereafter. I emphasise the role of the coherence of the web of measurement in the context of change and improvement in standards. 相似文献

Structural and mechanistic studies on the crotonase superfamily (CS) are reviewed with the aim of illustrating how a conserved structural platform can enable catalysis of a very wide range of reactions. Many CS reactions have precedent in the 'carbonyl' chemistry of organic synthesis; they include alkene hydration/isomerization, aryl-halide dehalogenation, (de)carboxylation, CoA ester and peptide hydrolysis, fragmentation of beta-diketones and C-C bond formation, cleavage and oxidation. CS enzymes possess a canonical fold formed from repeated betabetaalpha units that assemble into two approximately perpendicular beta-sheets surrounded by alpha-helices. CS enzymes often, although not exclusively, oligomerize as trimers or dimers of trimers. Two conserved backbone NH groups in CS active sites form an oxyanion 'hole' that can stabilize enolate/oxyanion intermediates. The range and efficiency of known CS-catalyzed reactions coupled to their common structural platforms suggest that CS variants may have widespread utility in biocatalysis. 相似文献

Tautomerase superfamily members have an amino-terminal proline and a β–α–β fold, and include 4-oxalocrotonate tautomerase
(4-OT), 5-(carboxymethyl)-2-hydroxymuconate isomerase (CHMI), trans- and cis-3-chloroacrylic acid dehalogenase (CaaD and cis-CaaD, respectively), malonate semialdehyde decarboxylase (MSAD), and macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF), which
exhibits a phenylpyruvate tautomerase (PPT) activity. Pro-1 is a base (4-OT, CHMI, the PPT activity of MIF) or an acid (CaaD,
cis-CaaD, MSAD). Components of the catalytic machinery have been identified and mechanistic hypotheses formulated. Characterization
of new homologues shows that these mechanisms are incomplete. 4-OT, CaaD, cis-CaaD, and MSAD also have promiscuous activities with a hydratase activity in CaaD, cis-CaaD, and MSAD, PPT activity in CaaD and cis-CaaD, and CaaD and cis-CaaD activities in 4-OT. The shared promiscuous activities provide evidence for divergent evolution from a common ancestor,
give hints about mechanistic relationships, and implicate catalytic promiscuity in the emergence of new enzymes.

In its role as a pineal hormone, melatonin is a pleiotropic, nocturnally peaking and systemically acting chronobiotic. These effects are largely explained by actions via G protein-coupled membrane receptors found in the suprachiasmatic nucleus, but also in numerous other sites. Nuclear (ROR/RZR), cytoplasmic (quinone reductase-2, calmodulin, calreticulin) and mitochondrial binding sites and radical-scavenging properties contribute to the actions of melatonin. Regulation of pineal melatonin biosynthesis is largely explained by control mechanisms acting on arylalkylamine N-acetyltransferase, at the levels of gene expression and/or enzyme stability influenced by phosphorylation and interaction with 14-3-3 proteins. Melatonin is not only a hormone but is also synthesized in numerous extrapineal sites, in which it sometimes attains much higher quantities than in the pineal and the circulation. It is also present in many taxonomically distant groups of organisms, including bacteria, fungi, and plants. Moreover, melatonin is a source of bioactive metabolites, such as 5-methoxytryptamine, N(1)-acetyl-N(2)-formyl-5-methoxykynuramine and N(1)-acetyl-5-methoxykynuramine. 相似文献

In 1877 James Clerk Maxwell and his student Donald MacAlister refined Henry Cavendish's 1773 null experiment demonstrating the absence of electricity inside a charged conductor. This null result was a mathematical prediction of the inverse square law of electrostatics, and both Cavendish and Maxwell took the experiment as verifying the law. However, Maxwell had already expressed absolute conviction in the law, based on results of Michael Faraday's. So, what was the value to him of repeating Cavendish's experiment? After assessing whether the law was as secure as he claimed, this paper explores its central importance to the electrical programme that Maxwell was pursuing. It traces the historical and conceptual re-orderings through which Maxwell established the law by constructing a tradition of null tests and asserting the superior accuracy of the method. Maxwell drew on his developing ‘doctrine of method’ to identify Cavendish's experiment as a member of a wider class of null methods. By doing so, he appealed to the null practices of telegraph engineers, diverted attention from the flawed logic of the method, and sought to localise issues around the mapping of numbers onto instrumental indications, on the grounds that ‘no actual measurement … was required’. 相似文献

Several mutations that decrease the basal signaling activity of G-protein coupled receptors (GPCRs) with pathogenic implications
are known. Here we study the molecular mechanisms responsible for this phenotype and investigate how basal and further activated
receptor conformations are interrelated. In the basally active thyroid stimulating hormone receptor (TSHR) we combined spatially-distant
mutations with opposing effects on basal activity in double-mutations and characterized mutant basal and TSH induced signaling.
Mutations lowering basal activity always have a suppressive influence on TSH induced signaling and on constitutively activating
mutations (CAMs). Our results suggest that the conformation of a basally ‘silenced’ GPCR might impair its intrinsic capacity
for signaling compared to the wild-type. Striking differences in conformation and intramolecular interactions between TSHR
models built using the crystal structures of inactive rhodopsin and partially active opsin help illuminate the molecular details
underlying mutations decreasing basal activity.

The ratio of sides in the generating triangle 4:9 may thus be interpreted as an approximation for the angle of ecliptic. While the distinction between theory and experiment is often used to discuss the place of simulation from a philosophical viewpoint, other distinctions are possible from a sociological perspective. Turkle (1995) distinguishes between cultures of calculation and cultures of simulation and relates these cultures to the distinction between modernity and postmodernity, respectively. What can we understand about contemporary simulation practices in science by looking at them from the point of view of these two computer cultures? What new questions does such an analysis raise for further studies? On the basis of two case studies, the present paper compares and discusses simulation activities in astrophysics and meteorology. It argues that simulation practices manifest aspects of both of these cultures simultaneously, but in different situations. By employing the dichotomies surface/depth, play/seriousness, and extreme/reasonable to characterize and operationalize cultures of calculation and cultures of simulation as sensitizing concepts, the analysis shows how simulation code work shifts from development to use, the importance of but also resistance towards too much visualizations, and how simulation modelers play with extreme values, yet also try to achieve reasonable results compared to observations. 相似文献
