On how to teach reading

This thesis tries to pursue how to teach reading,how to develop the students' reading competence,and how to improve their reading ability.It is intended to study the issue from the nature of reading-the features of written language,and the physical process of reading.After the explanation of models of reading,I present several strategies for reading comprehension,for our teachers to discuss,to teach the students,as well as some more techniques and more cautions in teaching reading.     

Practical Advice on Improve Students' Reading Ability

English reading has been considered as the most important part in college English teaching and has been paid much attention to.Improving students＇ reading ability has always been a focus in college English teaching,for the students will obtain the information conveyed in English mainly through reading.However,the teaching effect is not satisfactory.To train the students to get good reading levels is an important objective pursued by the teachers.This thesis will analyze the problems of the students ＇ reading,and give some practical advice on improve students ＇ reading ability.     

Improving Learners' Reading Skill in EFL Class

Topics around helping students to acquire the skill of reading have become increasingly popular in the discussion of foreign language teaching. In this paper, the author emphasizes the importance of improving learners＇ reading skill, presents the understanding of three factors concerning how to improve learners＇ reading comprehension in EFL class and then introduces a 90-minute lesson plan to illustrate the statements.

Effective Ways for Promoting College English Teaching——Laying emphasis on reading teaching

In order to improve the students' reading ability,teachers should deal with the relationship between teaching and reading,following the principles of high input and helping the students to eliminate different obstacles during the course of English teaching,teachers are also supposed to balance relationships among intensive reading,extensive reading and fast reading while we are selecting and using readingmaterials.In addition,this article particularly refers to repetition in effective reading ways--an effective reading skill but often neglected bymost students.

As one of the outstanding figures in the pre-Reform Movement in the nineteenth century,Marcel was known to us by his fa-mous proposal of＂reading first＂.However,he and his proposal were unfairly neglected by his contemporaries and his successors.In fact,thisproposal was based on a rational theory of reading： the cognitive process of reading and the distinction between impression and expression.This proposal is worth attending to afresh.     

Schema Theory and the Teaching of Reading

Schema theory indicates that prior knowledge forms a schema in the mind and this will inevitably influence reading comprehension. Therefore, in the teaching of reading, teachers should find ways to activate the schemata in the mind of the students. Titles, headlines and pictures in a text may serve the function. All texts are related to cultnre to some degree, especially in the case of texts introducing foreign cultures. Therefore, it is also important to integrate cultural factors in teaching, which will form new schemata in the mind of the students. Besides that, teaching materials should be chosen in accordance with the students＇ level of knowledge. New knowledge should be kept in an appropriate proportion to the old knowledge. Only in this way can the schemata stored in the mind of the students be activated easily, and new knowledge will also be acquired at the same time.     

The Application of English New spaper Reading in English Learning and Its Problems

Reading is the basic way for learners to study English,to obtain various information as well as knowledge,and to improve the proficiency of understanding and expressing.English newspaper reading,owing to its own characteristics,will make up for the shortcomings of conventional textbooks at quite a high level.The primary goal of this research is to investigate the general situation of English newspaper reading among college students,their attitudes toward the teaching of English newspaper reading and their problems in reading newspapers by conducting a questionnaire among non-English majors.Finally,it suggests a reasonable method of English newspaper learning based on the problems this questionnaire indicates.

Recent years more and more attention is paid to schemata theory.Many scholars have found its significant effects on reading comprehension through various experiments.It is essential for the Students to have both the formal schemata and content schemata in their brain when reading.

The Effectiveness of Strategies-based Instruction on Postgraduates' English Vocabulary Learning

This ten-week quasi-experimental study was undertaken to explore the effectiveness of strategies-based vocabulary instruction on English vocabulary learning of postgraduate learners.
