Somatostatin immunoneutralization overcomes the inhibitory effects of quipazine and pargyline on growth hormone secretion in domestic fowl

The inhibitory effects of pargyline and quipazine on chicken growth hormone secretion were overcome by passive immunoneutralization of endogenous somatostatin (SRIF)-14 or SRIF-28(1-14)-like immunoreactivity. Administration of the specific antisera to control birds pretreated with 0.9% NaCl elevated the basal plasma GH concentrations. These results suggest that peptides with SRIF-14 or SRIF-28(1-14)-like immunoreactivity tonically inhibit GH secretion and are at least partially responsible for the inhibitory effects of pargyline and quipazine on GH release in immature domestic fowl.

Zusammenfassung Beschreibung der somatischen Chromosomen des Haushuhns nach Colchicinbehandlung. Die Chromosomenzahl schwankt zwischen 39 und 76. 50% der Chromosomenplatten haben Zahlen zwischen 60 und 70. Die Makrochromosomen zeigen keine Abweichung in der Zahl. Die Zahlvariationen sind hauptsächlich durch die Mikrochromosomen bedingt.

Electrical stimulation of the intrinsic nerves of the renal portal valve of the domestic fowl demonstrated the presence of noradrenergic inhibitory, and cholinergic excitatory fibres. They may be involved in the control of venous return.

The identification of dansyl sarcosine and its occurrence in molluscs.

An unknown dansyl derivative was identified as dansyl sarcosine. In molluscs, sarcosine was found to be largely localized to the nervous system. Examination of individual snail neurones, regions of the octopus brain and the squid giant synapse showed dramatic variations in sarcosine levels.     

Oxidative metabolism of the hypothalamus in hypophysectomized-castrated rats

Resumen Los resultados obtenidos han indicado que el incremento del consumo de oxígeno en el hipotálamo anterior y posterior de los animales hipofisectomizados desaparece si estos animales son castrados simultaneamente con la hipofisectomía. Se discute la importancia de la presencia del testículo en la elevación de la actividad metabólica del hipotálamo luego de la hipofisectomía.

Effect of hypophysectomy on the oxidative and glycolytic metabolism of hypothalamus

Resumen En el presente trabajo se ha estudiado el consumo de oxígeno y la producción de ácido láctico en hipotálamo anterior, medio y posterior en animales hipofisectomizados. Los resultados obtenidos indicaron que la hipofisectomía produce un significativo incremento en la actividad oxidativa del hipotálamo anterior y posterior sin modificar el hipotálamo medio.

The action of tranquilizing drugs on brain metabolism

Zusammenfassung Die Tranquilizer Miltown (Meprobamat) und Benactyzin beeinflussen den Gehirnzellstoffwechselin vitro qualitativ wie Largactil, das heisst, sie hemmen die oxydative Phosphorylierung und gleichzeitig auch die ATPase-Aktivität. Demgegenüber hemmt das bloss über eine sedative Wirkung verfügende Captodiamin (Covatin) nur die oxydative Phosphorylierung und lässt die ATPase-Aktivität unbeeinflusst. Dies spricht dafür, dass zur Auslösung einer largactilartigen Wirkung beide oberen Hemmungsprozesse notwendig sind.     

Effect of anaesthesia on growth hormone secretion in the domestic fowl (Gallus domesticus)

Summary Chloral hydrate, Equithesin, Althesin, Rompun, Sagatal and ether anaesthesia lowered the concentration of plasma growth hormone in immature cockerels. Handling and serial bleeding of the conscious controls had no effect on the growth hormone concentration.     

Effect of muscimol on dopamine metabolism of the rat hypothalamus

Summary Muscimol, a potent GABA receptor agonist, produced increases in DOPAC and dopamine concentrations in the rat hypothalamus. GABAergic receptors, therefore, modulate hypothalamic dopaminergic neurones.This work was supported by the National health and Medical Research Council of Australia. The authors are grateful to Dr P. The influence of inhibitors of amine metabolism on the effects of serotonin and its metabolites on photic evoked potential in rabbits

Resumen El estudio de la curva dosis-respuesta demuestra que el 5-hidroxi-triptofol y el acido 5-hidroxi-indolacético son tan potentes como la serotonina en modificar las respuestas corticales ópticas en el conejo. Pretratamiento con pargilina o con disulfiram, dos inhibidores distintos del metabolismo de las neuroaminas, influenció marcadamente los efectos de la serotonina sin cambiar los efectos de sus metabolitos.
