Glycoprotein biosynthesis in splenic cells. Purification of a microsomal galactosyl-transferase.

One part of the microsomal galactosyl-transferase activity of splenic cells of rats can by solubilized by the action of Triton X-100 and Tween 20. Its purification on a Sephadex G-200 column and by electrophoresis on a polyacrylamide gel leads to a solution of high specific enzymic activity.

The fasciolicidal activity of a halogenated benzenesulfonanilide.

Halogenated benzenesulfonanilides have potent fasciolicidal activity. The efficacy of 1 such compound in mice, sheep, and cattle is reported.     

Frescon: neurophysiological action of a molluscicide.

The molluscidice N-trityl morpholine (Frescon) has an unusual effect on the central nervous system of a freshwater snail. Nerve impulses become grouped into spontaneous "bursts", with many cells firing synchronously. This may result from interference with inhibitory processes.

Simple method for a medium-cell separation.

The present method makes possible a quick separation of cells from the medium with the aid of strips of filter paper and physiological solution. Cell suspension is put on the strip and all water soluble components are washed away by soaking in saline solution, while cells remain on the spot. The experiment on 14-C-uridine uptake proved the suitability of the method for membrane-transport studies.     

Vermipodia - a new type of cell process.

A new kind of cell process is described in leukemic cells in two cases of histiocytic malignancies. They were evident both with light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. As they have a tubular, worm like appearance, the name vermipodia has been given to them.     

Colloidal gold as a permanent marker of cells.

We have demonstrated that colloidal gold-labelled serum proteins are taken up by a number of cells in cultures established from the postnatal rodent neopallium. The colloidal gold enters and remains within secondary lysosomes over extended periods of time and, as well, persists after the subculture of these cells. The cell types that readily take up the label in our culture system are type-1 astrocytes, glial precursor cells and macrophages, whereas, only a small number of oligodendrocytes take up the label. The use of serum proteins to introduce colloidal gold into cells therefore seems to be a convenient and easy way to permanently mark cells.     

Microsomal metabolism as a determinant of aflatoxin toxicity.

The evidences to incriminate the possible role of microsomal drug metabolizing system in aflatoxin toxicity in rat have been reviewed. It is suggested that an effective drug metabolism results in decreased acute toxicity and the products of metabolism are more carcinogenic than the native toxin to the rat liver.
