Summary The catalysis of H₂O₂ decomposition by Cu²⁺-complexes of RNA and DNA has been investigated. It is shown that both complexes decompose H₂O₂, but only the Cu²⁺-RNA-system shows peroxidative activity too, e.g. only in this case the nucleotide bases are degraded. Thermal denaturation of DNA also leads to a Cu²⁺-complex with peroxidative activity, the latter being dependent on the degree of denaturation.

Zusammenfassung Mit der Methode der Präzipitationshemmung nachHerzenberg et al.⁶ wurde die Kreuzreaktion von Seren subhumaner Primaten mit einem Antiserum gegen menschliches ₁-Antitrypsin gemessen. Die Ergebnisse stimmen mit der geltenden Taxonomie gut überein. ₁-Antitrypsin hat sich während der Evolution offenbar weniger konservativ verhalten als Serumalbumin.

This identification confirms recent findings of the authors and ofRuzicka, Dürst andJeger and shows that the hydroxyle of ambreine (V) is at the same place as the hydroxyle of sclareol which is attached to the perhydronaphtalene ring.

Clearance of concentrated thymidine and deoxycytidine from the plasma of CBA mice

Résumé Le TdR concentré, avec le³HTdR comme traceur, fut injecté i.p. dans des souris de souche CBA. De temps en temps, jusqu'à 4 h après l'injection, on enregistra l'activité totale du³H et du THO dans le plasma. Dans le sang du sinus retroorbital, la production de THO était linéaire, mais la clearance du TdR exponentielle (t^1/2=45–50 min). Par contre, dans les échantillons de sang cardiaque, les courbes étaient modifiées par un maximum augmenté, 10 min après l'injection. Avec le temps la courbe de log₁₀ CdR devint de forme quadratique, indiquant sans doute la présence d'une grande quantité de produits intermédiaires de dégradation.

Intraaxonal iodate inhibits sodium inactivation

Zusammenfassung Iodat (IO ₃ ^– )-Ionen hemmen den Inaktivierungsvorgang des Natriumsystems, falls sie intraaxonal durch Diffusion vom abgeschnittenen Ende einer markhaltigen Froschnervenfaser her ans Innere der Schnürringmembran gelangen. Mit der Spannungsklemme erhält man dann in TEA-Ringer eine Strom-Spannungskurve des Natriumsystems auch mit lang dauernden Potentialänderungen. In der Stromklemme lassen sich unter diesen Umständen Aktionspotentiale mit Dauern bis zu 1 min registrieren.

Photochemistry of bilirubin

Riassunto Per azione della luce ultravioletta la bilirubina disciolta in CHCl₃-CH₃OH somma una molecola di metanolo fornendo un prodotto per il quale si dimostra la struttura III. Tale reazione, osservata anche con altri alcooli, suggerisce la possibilità che parte della bilirubina del siero dei neonati itterici sottoposti a fototerapia venga eliminata sotto forma di prodotti di fotoaddizione con sostanze nucleofile presenti nell'organismo.

Eventually, the above mechanism is supported by the observed pH dependence of photoadduct formation (faster at lower pH) under irradiation; pH of the medium was varied by adding acetic acid or triethylamine.
