Toxic substances produced byFusarium VI. Anti-F. oxysporum f. sp.carthami effect of 2,2′,4-trihydroxybenzophenone

Summary Anti-Fusarium oxysporum f. sp.carthami activity of 2,2,4-tri-hydroxybenzophenone was evaluated. Pretreatment with the benzophenone offered complete protection to safflower seeds and seedlings, and recovery of the latter from the fungal infection.

The first professors at the newly-established London University (later University College London) were appointed in 1827, but a chair in geology was not created there until 1841. In the intervening years, teaching in geology and palaeontology was included in other natural science courses. Early in 1831, John Phillips, keeper of the Yorkshire Museum at York, was prompted to give a formal course of geological lectures and subsequently he was informally offered the professorship, which he declined.     

Sertoli cells of adult rats in vitro. II. Effect of different steroid precursors on estradiol 17β-synthesis

Summary The estradiol 17-synthesis by ⁴ pathway has been studied in homogenous cultures of Sertoli cells isolated from adult rat testes. On the conformation of substituted cyclopentanones. Rotatory dispersion and spectral data of some steroidalα-halocyclopentanones

Zusammenfassung Die optische Rotationsdispersion sowie das Infrarotund Ultraviolett-Absorptionsspektrum von mehreren-Bromderivaten der 16-Keto- und 17-Ketosteroide wurde gemessen. Die Schlussfolgerungen aus Rotationsdispersion und Infrarotanalyse stimmen gut überein, es scheint jedoch, dass die Verschiebungen im Ultraviolett zur Bestimmung der Orientierung eines Halogenatoms in-Bromocyclopentanonen nicht in allen Fällen gebraucht werden können.

Dissociation constants of water-insoluble carboxylic acids by13C-NMR. pK as of mesobiliverdin-XIIIα and mesobilirubin-XIIIα

High-field¹³C-NMR of¹³C-enriched compounds in dilute aqueousd ₆-Me₂SO solutions provides a simple, accurate method for measuring pK _as of sparingly soluble carboxylic acids. Using this method, we found the pK _as of mesobilirubin-XIII to be 4.2 and 4.9, much lower values than reported recently for bilirubin, and of mesobiliverdin-XIII to be 3.9 and 5.3.     

Isotrinervi-2β-ol. Structural isomers in the defense secretions of allopatric populations of the termiteTrinervitermes gratiosus

Summary The defense secretions of 3 allopatric populations of the nasute termiteTrinervitermes gratiosus were analyzed. One population afforded a new trinervitene, isotrinervi-2-ol, a missing link in the hypothetical biosynthesis of the trinervitenes. Populations could be readily distinguished on the basis of the chromatographic profiles of their major and minor soldier frontal gland secretions.These studies were initiated (1975–76) with partial financial support by the International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology, Nairobi, Kenya and NIH Postdoctoral Fellowship AI-05076. Support by the Department of Chemistry of the State University of New York at Stony Brook and the technical assistance of Mr J. Engstrom allowed completion of this investigation.     

EXORCIST XIV: The Wrath of Maxwell’s Demon. Part II. From Szilard to Landauer and Beyond

In this second part of our two-part paper we review and analyse attempts since 1950 to use information theoretic notions to exorcise Maxwell’s Demon. We argue through a simple dilemma that these attempted exorcisms are ineffective, whether they follow Szilard in seeking a compensating entropy cost in information acquisition or Landauer in seeking that cost in memory erasure. In so far as the Demon is a thermodynamic system already governed by the Second Law, no further supposition about information and entropy is needed to save the Second Law. In so far as the Demon fails to be such a system, no supposition about the entropy cost of information acquisition and processing can save the Second Law from the Demon.     

A new prostaglandin metabolite of arachidonic acid. Formation of 6-keto-PGF1α by the rat stomach

Summary Arachidonic acid was transformed by rat stomach homogenates into a new prostaglandin viz. 6-Keto-PGF₁. Its structure was confirmed by mass spectrometry.Supported by a grant No. MA-4181 from the Medical Research Council of Canada. All mass spectra were recorded by Mr.L. Marai on the Varian MAT CH-5 gas chromatograph-mass spectrometer at the Best Institute, Toronto, an MRC regional facility.     

Structural features of prions explored by sequence analysis¶I. Sequence data

Animal prion proteins (PrPs) form at the sequence level a very homogenous and 'closed' family. Therefore, few of their structural and functional features can be gleaned from sequence comparison as is now possible on a wide scale for other protein families. To detect putatively related proteins (at the structural and/or functional level), we used a battery of sequence analysis tools. This analysis resulted in (i) the identification of a putative 'prion-like' domain within the envelope of foamy retroviruses, (ii) the detection of putative similarities between prions and an interferon-inducible membrane protein, and (iii) the proposal that of the TATA-box-binding protein is a structural scaffold, which might allow understanding of a key event leading to the structural conversion from PrP(C) (normal cellular prion structure) towards PrP(Sc) (pathogenic structure).

Summary The kinetic parameters of D₂O intake in the frog sciatic nerve are obtained by means of infrared spectroscopy. 3 aqueous compartments: a non-exchangeable one (29%) and 2 compartments of quasi-free exchangeable water: 50% intracellular and 21% extracellular, are revealed.The first communication in this series is V. Summary Oral administration to man of 20 mg ¹1-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) together with placebo or 40 mg cannabinol (CBN) or 40 mg cannabidiol (CBD) gave evidence of a possible limited interaction of THC with CBN but not with CBD as indicated by average plasma THC levels. Peak CBD and CBN concentrations were similar to that of THC, viz. about 5–8 ng/ml.Supported by the Swedish Medical Research Council and grant MH-00424 from the Veterans Administration.     

Effects of physalaemin, a vaso-active peptide from amphibian skin, on the excitability of an identifiable molluscan giant neurone of Achatina fulica Férussac.

We examined effects of several vasoactive peptides (substance P, physalaemin, neurotensin, bradykinin, angiotensin etc.) on the excitability of molluscan giant neurones identified in the subesophageal ganglia of Achatina fulica Férussac. Of these peptides, only physalaemin showed a remarkable excitatory effect on a giant tonically autoactive neurone.
