Reactive depolarization of muscle fibre membrane with slowly increasing middle-frequency current flow

Zusammenfassung Die Mittelfrequenz-Querreizung (5 kHz) wird am Sartorius des Frosches mittels intrazellulärer Ableitung am Reizort untersucht, wobei die Wechselstromamplitude linear langsam Über Minuten zunimmt. Die als reaktiv zu bezeichnende Depolarisierung ist ihrem Wesen nach ein eigenständiger Vorgang. Der hervorstechendste Unterschied gegenÜber der physikalisch aufgezwungenen Gleichstromdepolarisierung ist, dass keine Akkommodation nachweisbar ist.

Intracellular recording of electrical response of muscle fibre to transversely applied middle-frequency pulse stimulation

Zusammenfassung Der Froschsartorius wird mit Mittelfrequenz(20 kHz)-Stromstössen quer gereizt. Die Reizantwort wird mit intracellulärer Mikroelektrode am Reizort abgeleitet. Die lokale Depolarisierung und die daraus sich ergebende Auslösung des Aktionspotentials werden auf ihre Abhängigkeit von Stärke und Dauer der Reizimpulse untersucht.     

Denervation effects on choline depolarization of muscle membrane

Résumé Dans un muscle non dénervé, la choline provoque une dépolarisation permanente en présence de «Cs-Ringer» et transitoire en présence de «K-Ringer». La dénervation augmente la sensibilité de la membrane musculaire à la choline. Mais dans ce cas, le «Cs-Ringer» donne une réponse transitoire à la choline, semblable à celle obtenue avec le «K-Ringer».     

Transverse stimulation of a single node of ranvier by middle-frequency sinusoidal current bursts

Zusammenfassung Einzelne markhaltige Nervenfasern vonRana esculenta wurden mit Mittelfrequenz-Impulsen (20 kHz) quer durchströmt (Mittelfrequenz-Querreizung), Die Lage der Reizelektroden bezüglich eines Schnürrings wurde variiert, und die zugehörigen Reizschwellen wurden bestimmt. Die Simulierung der Experimente mit einem Modell zeigte, dass wirkliche Querreizung einer Nervenfaser im Bereich eines Schnürrings möglich ist, wobei für einen Schwellenreiz eine Feldstärke von 50 ± 16.5 V/cm (Scheitel zu Scheitel) notwendig ist.     

Involvement of thiols in the induction of inward current induced by silver in frog skeletal muscle membrane

Exposure of voltage-clamped frog skeletal muscle fibres to silver caused a maintained inward current which could be carried by Ca²⁺, Mg²⁺ or Na⁺. Inorganic Ca²⁺ channel blockers and dithiothreitol (SH reducing agent) diminished this current, but a Na⁺ channel blocker did not. Thus, silver activates the Ca²⁺ channel by acting on SH groups in a Ca²⁺ channel protein.     

Catalase activity in skeletal muscle of varying fibre types

Summary Slow oxidative skeletal muscles of rats and hamsters exhibit significantly greater catalase activity than fast oxidative muscles. Furthermore, regions of a single muscle may vary significantly.     

Geranylgeranylacetone protects human monocytes from mitochondrial membrane depolarization independently of Hsp70 expression

The anti-ulcer drug geranylgeranylacetone (GGA) has been shown to induce the expression of heat shock proteins (HSPs), in particular of Hsp70, in gastric and small intestine cells. In this study, we investigated whether GGA was able to induce Hsp70 in another cell type, human monocytes, which represent a well-established model of Hsp70 expression under oxidative stress. In these cells, GGA had no significant effect either on basal or tobacco smoke-induced Hsp70 expression. We further investigated the effects of GGA on mitochondria, a key organelle of oxidant-mediated cell injury and a putative target for GGA-mediated protection. GGA significantly increased basal mitochondrial membrane polarization and inhibited the decrease in mitochondrial membrane potential of human monocytes exposed to distinct sources of clinically relevant oxidants such as tobacco smoke and y-irradiation. Our results indicate that mitochondria are targets for GGA-mediated protection against oxidative stress in human monocytes, independently of Hsp70.

Riassunto Nella singola fibra muscolare di cavia a 38°C sono state determinate, applicando la «square pulse analysis», la resistenza, la costante di tempo, la costante di spazio e la capacità della membrana a riposo. È stato inoltre possibile calcolare la massima conduttanza per il sodio,gn a, che è risultata di 35,3 mmho/cm².     

Photodynamic effect of dye on frog muscle fibre using microelectrodes

Zusammenfassung Kurarisierte und nichtkurarisierte Frosch-Sartorii zeigten einen veränderlichen Grad der Depolarisation, wenn sie mit Bengalrot (1:25 000) gefärbt und durch scharf zentriertes Licht einer 300-Watt-Tungsten-Lampe beleuchtet wurden. Die Depolarisation wurde niemals im äusseren Natrium und ohne Sauerstoff beobachtet.     

Measurement of blood flow by heated thermocouple with feedback controlled current

Zusammenfassung Eine neue Messmethode für Durchblutungsmessungen besteht darin, dass selbstgeregelter Strom mit Hilfe des Rückkopplungsregelungssystems für die Heizung gebraucht wird. Mit dieser Methode wird der Temperaturunterschied zwischen den geheizten und den gekühlten Kontaktplatten ganz gering und konstant gehalten, so dass der Effekt der lokalen Wärmeakkumulation, der bei Heizung mit konstantem Strom entsteht, am geprüften Gewebe wegfällt. Diese Methode hat eine höhere Linearität und bessere Anwendungsfähigkeit über weitere Durchblutungsgebiete, und sie spricht auch schneller an als die frühere Methode der Heizung mit konstantem Strom.     

A micro-electrode amplifier with an infinite resistance current source for intracellular measurements of membrane potential and resistance changes under current clamp

Summary A microelectrode amplifier for intracellular electrophysiological research is described. It is equipped with an electronic infinite resistance constant current source for the injection of current into biological cells. With this amplifier the potential changes, the resistance changes and the dependence on extrinsic current of single cells can be measured independently and simultaneously.Acknowledgments.
