The effect of bradykinin on the electrical activity of rat jejunum

Summary Bradykinin increased the potential difference across both the jejunum and colon of the rat. This effect was significantly reduced by indomethacin, suggesting that it was mediated by prostaglandins. The possibility that bradykinin may contribute to the diarrhoea of the carcinoid syndrome by inducing a net secretory state in the intestine is discussed.

The effect of pH and methylation on the interaction of deoxycholate with rat liver alcohol dehydrogenase

Summary The activation of rat liver alcohol dehydrogenase by deoxycholate depends on the anionic form of the steroid. Methylation of the enzyme protein leads to an increase of both turnover number and K_m for ethanol and to a change in the effect of deoxycholate, which behaves as an inhibitor. It is suggested that the steroid and methylation effects depend on the same basic mechanism, in which one or more Lys groups are involved.Acknowledgment. We thank Professor A. The effect of lidocaine on the secretion induced by cholera toxin in the cat small intestine

Summary The intraluminal administration of lidocaine, a local anaesthetic agent, inhibits the net loss of fluid into the intestinal lumen produced by cholera toxin in the cat. Suppressor effect induced by sodium periodate on the antibody response of mouse splenic cells in vitro : inhibition of this effect by sodium borohydride]

Mild oxidation of mouse spleen cells by sodium periodate induces blastogenesis. Concomitantly, the in vitro response of these cells to sheep red blood cells is inhibited. Exposure of spleen cells to sodium borohydride following periodate treatment reduces blastogenesis and restores the immune response.     

Changes induced by the acute administration of iodide on secretion of iodinated components by the rat thyroid gland perfused in situ

Résumé Nous avons étudié l'effet de l'iodure 127 (10^–3 et 10^–4 M) sur la sécrétion de T₄ ^*, T₃ ^* et –I^* par la thyroïde de rat, prémarquée à l'iode 131 et perfusée in situ avec du sang non radioactif contenant 12 mU de TSH/ml. Il n'a pas été noté de changement significatif dans la sécrétion de T₄ ^* ou T₃ ^* jusqu'à 45 min après le début de l'administration d'iodure 127, qu'il y ait ou non du méthimazole (10^–3 M) dans le sang perfusé. Il y avait par contre une augmentation de la sécrétion d'-I^* pendant la perfusion de 10^–3 M d'ïodure, indiquant une décharge d'-I^* pendant la perfusion de 10^–3 M d'ïodure, indiquant une décharge d'-I^* de provenance intrathyroïdienne. Cet effet est similaire à celui noté auparavant pendant le perfusion de 10^–3 M de ClO ₄ ^– .

Zusammenfassung Durch direkte intratubuläre Applikation von Entkopplern und Antagonisten der ATP wird wahrscheinlich gemacht, dass ATP bei der aktiven Rückresorption von Na im proximalen Konvolut der Ratte eine entscheidende Rolle spielt.     

The application of sodium deoxycholate and Sephacryl-200 for the delipidation and separation of high density lipoprotein

Summary A method to remove lipids from human plasma high-density lipoprotein (HDL) was developed. The procedure required column chromatography on Sephacryl-200 in the presence of the bile salt sodium deoxycholate. The lipid free protein obtained retained the immunological properties of the native HDL.The author is grateful to Ms L. Gray for her excellent technical assistance and Dr M. The effect of antiserotonin on the experimental psychosis induced by dimethyltryptamine

Zusammenfassung 40 normale Personen bekamen DMT; der resultierende psychotische Zustand wurde beobachtet und registriert, 15 von diesen Versuchspersonen wiederholten das Experiment nach Verabreichung von Antiserotonin (UML-491). Das Antiserotonin hatte eine stark potenzierende Wirkung auf die experimentelle Psychose. Dies könnte die bekannte Theorie unterstützen, wonach der psychomimetische Effekt der halluzinogenen Stoffe, wenigstens teilweise, auf Antiserotoninwirkungen beruhen soll.     

Effects of ouabain and furosemide on saliva secretion induced by sympathomimetic agents in isolated,perfused rat submandibular glands

Summary The presence of 10^–3 M ouabain or furosemide in the perfusate inhibited saliva secretion induced by either isoproterenol (10^–5 M) or phenylephrine (10^–5 M) from isolated rat submandibular glands and caused characteristic alterations in the electrolyte composition of saliva.     

The effect of deoxycholate on microsomal adenosine triphosphatase prepared from the intestine of goldfish acclimatized to different temperatures

Riassunto L'attività di ATP-asi è stata studiata nella frazione dei microsomi preparata dalla mucosa intestinale del pesce dorato, acclimatato a 8° o 30°C. La differenza notata potrebbe essere una consequenza dell'alterazione nella struttura della membrana lipida plasmatica provocata per cambiamento della temperatura ambiente.
