The influence of sodium-8-chlorotheophyllinate (S8CT) on immune processes

Summary S8CT injected at the time of immunization significantly enhances specific IgM-production but has no effect on IgG-formation. Mitogen (PHA-P) induced macrophage migration inhibition of cells of S8CT pretreated animals is reduced. The same effect is observed, when normal cells are tested in the presence of S8CT in vitro. Blast transformation of B-lymphocytes but not of thymocytes is significantly stimulated by S8CT. Acid phosphatase activity is also stimulated in B-cells and- to a lesser degree-in cortisone-resistant T-lymphocytes whereas the activity of the total thymocyte population is reduced. No effect was seen on phagocytosis and intracellular bactericidal activity. A stimulatory effect of S8CT for B-cells is postulated.Presented in part at the Xth International Congress of Allergology and Clinical Immunology, Jerusalem/Israel 1979, Nov. 4–11.

Summary The phenylpropylamine fraction ofCatha edulis FORSK. grown in Kenya has been investigated. The major components have been found to be (S)-(–)--aminopropiophenone (1), (+)-norpseudoephedrine (2) and(–)-norephedrine (3). Quantitative ratios of1, 2, 3 in tissues of different age are discussed.

An analytical study of the neurosecretory cells of the brain inPhilosamia ricini (Hutt.) (Lepidoptera: Saturniidae) during post-embryonic development

Summary A multiplicity of types of neurosecretory cell (NSC), and uniformity in the numbers occurring in medial, lateral, posterior and tritocerebral groups, have been observed inP. ricini. 3 types of cells A, B and C, with their subtypes (A-1, A-2, A-3; B-1, B-2; C-1 and C-2) have been reported. Only B-cells increase in numbers during post-embryonic development. Others (A and C) remain constant throughout development. Abnormal staining behaviour of A-cells has also been reported.Acknowledgements. We are grateful to Prof. S.D. Optic lobe neurosecretory cells of an Indian spiderCryptophora sp. (Areinidae)

Summary In all the 3 pairs of optic lobes ofCryptophora sp. there are small groups of monopolar PF^– neurosecretory cells which take on a green colour by PF technique and red by Azan. Their function is unknown, but they may be involved with photoperiodically controlled activity rhythms.We wish to express our thanks to Prof. U.S. Srivastava for providing working facilities and valuable suggestions.     

Zur Stereochemie der Propandioldehydrase-Reaktion

Summary Propanedioldehydrase is shown to convert both (+)-(S)-2-²H-propanediol,3, and (–)-(R)-1-²H₂-propanediol,5, to specimens of deuterated propion-aldehyde, for which the (S)-configuration has been established. Thus, in the propanedioldehydrase reaction migration of hydrogen atoms from C–1 to C–2 always occurs with inversion of configuration.     

Décharge catalytique du proton en présence de séléno-cystine et de nickel

Summary It has been found that seleno-cystine, reduced to seleno-cysteine and bound in ligand form to nickel ion, produces catalytic hydrogen discharge in slight acid media. This discharge occurs in the region of a catalytic prewave located at more positive potentials (E_1/2=–1.14 V, S.C.E.) compared with the normal wave of H₃O+(E_1/2=–1,67 V, S.C.E.).     

Naturally occurring heterocycles inducing drought resistance in plants

Summary During screening of animal metabolites which induce drought resistance in plants, two diketopiperazines, cyclo(L-Hyp-L-Pro) (1) and cyclo(L-Hyp-L-Leu) (2), emerged as effective. When rice seeds were pretreated with the cyclic dipeptides (1 and2) during their germination period, the resulting seedlings showed significant resistance to water-stress caused by 0.5–1.5% NaCl solution or 2.5–5.0% mannitol solution.     

Enantiomeric cannabinoids: stereospecificity of psychotropic activity

Summary The 1,1-dimethylheptyl homolog of (–)-(3R,4R)-7-hydroxy-delta-6-tetrahydrocannabinol (compoundII) is highly psychotropic in mice, rats and pigeons. The (+)-(3S,4S) enantiomer (III) was found to be psychotropically inactive at doses up to several thousand times those of the ED₅₀ of (II).We thank Dr A. Breuer and Mrs H. Attività di neurosecrezione nel sistema nervoso di un Turbellario rabdocelo:Mesostoma lingua (Abildg.)

Summary This investigation is concerned with the neurosecretory activity in the cerebral ganglion of a rhabdocoel turbellarian:Mesostoma lingua (Abildg.).It was observed that the neurosecretory activity is primarily localized in the pear-shaped cells, situated near to the region where the external anterior cords arise from the dorsolateral tract of the cerebral ganglion.The neurosecretory material appears to be transported — via the ventral cords — to the transverse cord behind the pharynx, where it is stored. Then, probably, it flows down into the parenchyma.     

Enzymhistochemische Untersuchungen an durstaktivierten neurosekretorischen Zellen der Ratte

Summary In hypothalamic neurosecretory nuclei of rats subject to water withdrawl for 1–14 days, a marked increase in the activities of histochemically detected acid phosphatase, thiamine pyrophosphatase and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase is observed. LDH and SDH activities do not change. Two different cell types can be distinguished by means of the acid phosphatase and TPPase reactions.     

Minor nitrogenous sesquiterpenes from the marine spongeAxinella cannabina. A hypothesis for the biogenesis of the spiro-axane skeleton

Summary Three nitrogenous sesquiterpenoids (4–6), possessing an isocyanide, isothiocyanate or formylamino function, have been isolated from the marine spongeAxinella cannabina. The proposed structures were based on interpretation of spectral data including 2D-NMR techniques and chemical evidence. A plausible pathway for the biogenesis of these compounds and the co-occurring spiro-axane (1–3) metabolites is proposed.Work supported by C.N.R. Further perhydroazulene diterpenes from marine organisms

Summary 3 novel diterpenes,4–6, having the perhydroazulene skeleton already found in pachydictiol A (1) and dictyol A (2) and B (3), have been isolated from both the digestive gland of Aplysia depilans and algae of the family Dictyotaceae.     

Pectinoacetals A-C: novel sterol hemiacetals from the gorgonianCtenocella pectinata

Three polyhydroxylated sterol hemiacetals, pectinoacetals A-C (1–3) have been isolated as their acetyl derivatives (4–6) from the acetic anhydride treated organic extract of the Indo-Pacific gorgonianCtenocella pectinata. These natural products were found to undergo very rapid epimerization at the C-18 chiral center and thus exist only as an equilibrium mixture of two diastereomers. The structure assignments are based on spectral studies and chemical modifications of the natural products.     

Age variation in the increase of hypothalamic and brain stem contents of phenylethanolamine m-octopamine and p-octopamine in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SH kyoto)

Summary Phenylethanolamine, m=octopamine and p-octopamine contents were determined as a function of age in the hypothalamus and brain stem of spontaneously hypertensive rats and controls Wistar Kyoto. In hypothalamus, the content of the 3 amines was 2–4-fold greater for the SH rats. In the brain stem, the phenylethanolamine and p-octopamine contents were 2–3-fold greater in SH rats but 5–6-fold higher in the case of m-octopamine. The difference appears at 3 weeks and correlates the blood pressure with the increase of age. The significance of these findings is discussed.This work has been completed at the Tokyo University. Selective killing of smooth muscle cells in culture by the ricin A-chain conjugated with monoclonal antibodies to a cell surface antigen via a dextran bridge

Summary Monoclonal antibodies to a surface antigen of the modulated smooth muscle cells originally isolated from the rat aorta media were conjugated with ricin A-chain via an oxidized dextran bridge. The interaction of cultured cells with the conjugates obtained and with control substances was monitored following incorporation of¹⁴C-leucine radioactivity. It was found that¹⁴C-leucine incorporation was suppressed by 80–90% at a conjugate concentration of 10^–6–10^–7 M. Antigen-negative cells (line IAR; rat hepatocytes) were insensitive to the conjugate at any concentration used. Control use of purified ricin A-chain, native or oxidized dextran, specific and nonspecific IgG did not affect normal¹⁴C-leucine incorporation. The data obtained may be useful for designing targeted drug transport systems and for selective screening of modulated smooth cells in vascular pathology models in vivo.     

Aging and endothelin-1 induced vascular contractions

Summary Contractions produced by endothelin-1 (0.3–30 nM) have been investigated in aorta, renal arteries and mesenteric arteries from 2- and 24-month-old Sprague-Dawley rats. In senescent rats the EC₅₀ values of endothelin-1 for aorta and renal artery were significantly increased (aorta: from 6.2 to 12 nM; renal artery: from 5.2 to 7.8 nM). For mesenteric artery the EC₅₀ value (4.3 nM) was unchanged by aging, whereas the maximal contractile response to endothelin-1 was enhanced (from 8.3 to 11.7 mN). In contrast, there was no significant age-related difference in the maximal endothelin-1 response of aorta and renal artery. The present data demonstrate a reduced sensitivity for aorta and renal artery and an enhanced maximal response to endothelin-1 in the mesenteric artery in senescent rats.     

Cannabiripsol: A novelCannabis constituent

Summary Cannabiripsol [(–)(6aR, 9S, 10S, 10aR)9,10-dihydroxy-hexahydrocannabinol] (1), a new cannabinoid was isolated from a South African Cannabis variant. The structure was determined by spectral means and by synthesis.Acknowledgments. Cadmium in the atmosphere

Summary Cadmium is present naturally in the air mainly as a result of volcanic emissions and release by vegetation. Anthropogenic sources, which overall give rise to emissions one order of magnitude greater than natural sources, are largely primary non-ferrous metals production and waste incineration. Measured concentrations of airborne cadmium are typically < 1 ng m^–3 at remote sites, 0.1–10 ng m^–3 at rural sites and 1–100 ng m^–3 at urban and industrial sites, dependent upon the nature and proximity of local sources. Particle sizes are generally <2 m, and often considerably smaller, consistent with an anthropogenic source and a long atmospheric life-time. Cadmium deposition to the land occurs with fluxes varying from 0.05 ng cm^–2 month^–1 in Greenland to circa 1000 ng cm^–2 month^–1 in the vicinity of major industrial sources. The possible significance of a motor vehicular source of airborne cadmium is also reviewed.     

Drug interactions in intestinal absorption of3H-digitoxin in rats

Summary The absorption of³H-digitoxin from perfused rat small intestine was inhibited by probenecid (1.0×10^–2 M), ethacrynic acid (0.5×10^–3 M), and mersalyl (8.0×10^–3 M) indicating that digitoxin absorption is at least partly an active process.     

On the significance of the rostral process of bipolar neurosecretory cells in the caudal neurosecretory system of certain catfishes

Summary Neurosecretory substance has been identified in the rostral process of bipolar neurosecretory cells of the caudal neurosecretory system in 4 Indian catfishes, using acid violet stain. The role of the rostral process in the transmission of the neurosecretory substance is discussed.We thank Prof. U.S. Srivastava, Allahabad University, for laboratory facilities and useful suggestions.
