Reoxidation of reduced hen egg white lysozyme fragment 1–123

Summary The reactivation of reduced lysozyme, whose 6 COOH-terminal amino acid including cysteine 127 were cut off, was studied. The results show that the disulfide bridge I–VIII as well as the COOH-terminal hexapeptide do not play a decisive role in the acquisition of the native 3-dimensional structure of the enzyme.Acknowledgments. Binding capacities of various analogues of S-adenosyl-L-homocysteine to protein methyltransferase II from human erythrocytes

Summary A series of analogues of S-adenosyl-L-homocysteine, modified mainly in the amino acid portion of the molecule, have been synthesized. All were found to be competitive inhibitors of protein methyltransferase II from human erythrocytes. S-adenosyl-L-homocysteine remains however by far the most effective inhibitor of the methylase.Acknowledgments. (Z,E)-α-farnesene,main constitutent of the hypertrophied Dufour's gland of the major workers ofPheidole pallidula (Formicidae)

Summary In the European dimorphic ant,Pheidole pallidula, the Dufour's gland of the major workers is hypertrophied and secretes nearly pure (Z, E)--farnesene. This compound is also present in the Dufour's gland of the minor workers but constitutes only around 10% of the volatiles. Mitigation of graft-versus-host disease in rats treated with allogeneic and xenogeneic antilymphocytic sera

Summary The survival of rats receiving a sublethal dose of CY and grafted with allogeneic bone marrow, was prolonged by treatment with either allogeneic or xenogeneic anti-lymphocytic sera. These seem to prevent a fatal GVHD while allowing a temporary take of the graft.This work was supported by Grant No. FOR 007. Modifications with chelating agents of the effects of γ-ray fractionated exposures on chromosome aberrations

Résumé Des graines sèches deNigella damascena ont été traitées par les agents de chélation suivants: l'EDTA, le 2, 2-dipyridyl, le Cupferron, la 8-hydroxyquinoléne et le diéthyldithiocarbamate avant d'Être irradiées par les rayons du⁶⁰Co à des doses fractionnées (2×2 krads) séparées par des intervalles de 0 à 5 min. On a constaté une suppression de l'effet de fractionnement et une augmentation absolue des fréquences de tous les types d'aberrations des chromosomes. Par contre, pour des inter-valles courts ou nuls, un effet radioprotecteur est observé par rapport au témoin.

Sulfamides et granulations de Heinz

Summary In vitro, experiments on sulfonamides show that these substances are without action on the red cells, in respect to the formation of Heinz's corpuscles, at the blood concentration generally obtained in therapeutic practice. In vivo, the presence of Heinz's granules was noted after the injection of large sulfanilamide doses in the white mouse, but not after the administration of sulfopyridine and sulfathiazole. Therapeutical doses of all these drugs did not give rise to Heinz's corpuscles in several patients.

Tissue catecholamines following renal denervation in spontaneously hypertensive rats

Effect of sodium citrate on the translocation of bacterial DNA inSolanum lycopersicum esc.

Résumé L'effet du citrate de sodium sur la translation d'ADN d'origine bactérienne chez la tomate a été étudié biochimiquement et par autoradiographie. Les plantes prétraitées au citrate prennent plus d'ADN étranger que les plantes témoins. En revanche le citrate n'a pas d'effet sur la dépolymérisation du DNA pris par la plante. Les relations entre ces phénomènes et les différents modes possibles de pénétration du DNA étranger sont examinés.

The effects of heat on the interactions between leucyl-tRNA synthetases and tRNA's

Résumé La chaleur affecte considérablement l'activité acceptrice d'acide aminé des tRNA à des températures auxquelles leur structure spatiale est très peu modifiée. L'utilisation d'un enzyme thermostable permet de suggérer que la perte d'activité biologique des tRNA est liée à de minimes modifications de leur structure spatiale.

Some characteristics of the ‘lymphoid tumour’ inducing agent ofXenopus laevis

Résumé L'infectivité des extraits tissulaires de la «tumeur lymphoïde» deXenopus laevis diminue après traitement à l'éther, au chloroforme, et à la température de 56 °C, tandis qu'elle reste inchangée après traitement au pH acide. Summary Preceding the infolding of the cross wall separating pseudoconidial units in the aschizogenous, amyc mutant ofNeurospora crassa is the development of an electron-dense ring seen in section as 2 spots on opposite sides of the cell wall. Vesiculated elements of the endoplasmic reticulum are seen in close proximity to the centripetally progressing edge of the interconidial septum.

Effects of gamma-ray fractionated doses on chromosome aberration frequencies

Résumé Des graines sèches deNigella damascena ont été irradiées par les rayons du Co⁶⁰ à des doses fractionnées de 2 × 4 krads et 2 × 2 krads séparées par des intervalles de temps allant de 1–64 min. Les résultats des 2 expériences se confirment et montrent qu'à des intervalles de temps de 4 min et plus, la fréquence de tous les types d'aberrations diminue de manière significative. Ces faits impliquent l'existence de mécanismes réparateurs où interviennent peu ou pas du tout les processus métaboliques.

Visual stimulus localization as a function of brightness

Résumé Dans une tâche consistant à localiser un point sur une barre horizontale ou verticale, on mesure l'information transmise en fonction de l'éclairement et de l'information du stimulus. On trouve une relation linéaire directe entre l'information transmise et le logarithme de l'éclairement. Cette relation reste valable pour diverses quantités d'information émise.

Effect of temperature on the translocation of bacterial DNA inSolanum lycopersicum esc

Résumé Nous avons étudié l'influence de différentes températures sur la translation de l'ADN d'origine bactérienne chez les plantules de tomate. La température n'a aucune influence en elle-même. Néanmoins des variations de température diminuent la dépolymérisation de l'ADN étranger migré dans la plante.
