Prof. Chen Yiyu, President of NSFC, paid a successful visit to France and Germany from July 12 to 23, 2004.     

President Chen Yiyu Met with Omi

On April 24, 2008, Prof. Chen Yiyu, NSFC President, met with the delegation headed by Mr. Kouji OMI, Member of the Japanese Lower House of Representatives at Beijing Hotel. Mr. Omi briefed the 5th Science and Technology in Society Forum to be held in Kyoto in October 2008 and formally invited Prof. Chen to attend the Forum. Prof. Chen expressed his interests to the Forum and had a discussion on the topics of the Forum.     

Prof. Zhu Zuoyan meets with Ms. Flach

On June 25, Prof. Zhu Zuoyan, Vice President of NSFC, met with a German delegation led by Ms. Flach, Chair-man of the Commission of Education, Science and Technology, the German Federal Parliament. The meeting started with a brief introduction of the NSFC, especially its cooperation with Germany from the Chinese side, and was fol-lowed by a heated discussion on issues concerning peer review, budget and distribution,     

Prof. Zhu Daoben pays a working visit to Belgium and Poland

NSFC delegation, headed by Prof. Zhu Daoben, Vice President, paid a visit to Belgium and Poland from May 11 to 19. In Belgium, Prof. Zhu and his delegation held a meeting with Prof. Dr. Maurice Pensaert, Secretary General,and Dr. Benno Hinnekint, Director, Flanders Foundation for Scientific Research (FWO). During the talk, both sides exchanged the information about the latest development of the two organizations and their international activities,     

NSFC President Attended the 6th Meeting of Heads of Research Councils in Asia

On November 6, 2008, the 6th Meeting of Heads of Research Councils in Asia was held in Jeju, Korea. NSFC President Prof. Chen Yiyu headed a 4-member delegation to attend the meeting. His counterparts, Mr. Hyung Chul Moon, Acting Chairman and CEO of Korea Science and Engineering Foundation （KOSEF） and Prof. Motoyuki Ono, President of Japan Society for Promotion of Science （JSPS） also headed their delegations at their presence. In the meeting, three organizations presented their own latest sci ence and technology policies and had an active discussion on topics of mutual interests.     

President Chen Yiyu Visits Greece,Spain and Germany

During his visit in Greece,Prof.Chen met with Anna Diamantopoulou,the Minister of Education in charge of science and technology affairs.Prof.Chen introduced China's science and technology structure and the important role of NSFC in the system.The Minister expressed great interest in collaboration with China in science and technology.Both sides agreed to actively promote Sino-Greece collaboration in science and technology and hope to sign the NSFC-GSRT bilateral cooperation agreement during the Minister's...     

President Chen Yiyu Meets with Former NSF Director

NSFC President Chen Yiyu met with Dr.Arden L.Bement,former NSF Director on April 27,2011. Prof.Chen extended his welcome to Dr.Bement and expressed his appreciation to Dr Bement's positive contributions to China-US collaboration in basic research.He also introduced NSFC's recent development. During the meeting,the two sides exchanged views on such topics as climate change,water and energy challenges,and discussed the perspective of collaboration in these fields.     

President Chen Yiyu Visits Taiwan Province

At the invitation of the K. T. Li Foundation for the Development of Science and Technology, a NSFC delegation of 6 members led by its President, Prof. Chen Yiyu, visited Taiwan, China from June 12 to 18, 2008.

May 17-19, 2004, the First China-US Symposium on Nanoscale Science and Technology, co-sponsored by NS-FC, CAS and NSF, co-chaired by CAS Vice President Bai Chunli and US NNI Director Mike Roco, was held in Bei-jing. Over seventy participants from China and United States exchanged the frontier achievements and development and discussed the cooperation between China and US in the area of Nacoscale science and technology. The First Sino-Thailand Joint Workshop for Natural Products and Drug Discovery Held in Chengdu

The First Sino-Thailand Joint Workshop for Natural Products and Drug Discovery was successfully held in Chengdu from September 16 to 19, 2008. This is the first workshop jointly organized by NSFC and Thailand Research Fund （TRF） under the MOU between the two funding agencies. During the meeting, 30 distinguished scientists from both countries reached several agreements on further cooperation through idea exchange and discussion session. Dr. Piyawat Boon-long,     

NSFC President Chen Yiyu Met with RFBR President

NSFC President Prof. Chen Yiyu met with President of Russian Foundation for Basic Research （RF- BR）, Prof. Vladislav Ya. Panchinko and Prof. Vladimir Kovalev, Director of Department of International Relations of RFBR on November 22, 2008. Both leaders briefed the latest developments of respective organization and discussed the issues of science fund management, strategies and priorities of disciplines, etc. , and expressed satisfactory regarding the friendly and fruitful cooperative relations that have been established between NSFC and RFBR since long. Consensus was reached to further explore possibilities to foster collaborations between young scientists by holding joint workshops on specific topics with common interest.     

6.4 Billion Yuan for NSFC Projects in 2008

NSFC President Prof. Chen Yiyu announced at NSFC＇s Sixth Plenary Session of the General Assembly that a budget of 53.59 billon yuan, which is an increased of 25% to that of last year, was approved by the government for the fiscal year 2008. In practice, NSFC, based on the demand of national budgeting reform and the development of basic research, will arrange a funding plan of 6.4 billion yuan.     

Prof. Sun Jiaguang attended the 11^th Sino-US Joint Commission Meeting on Scientific and Technological Cooperation

Oct. 10-18, 2004, NSFC delegation headed by Prof. Sun Jiaguang, Vice President of NSFC visited the United States of America. They attended the 11 th Sino-US Joint Commission Meeting on Scientific and Technological Coop-eration, and visited NSF, University of Washington, the Boeing Company and Microsoft. 从啁啾脉冲放大到强场激光物理——2018年诺贝尔物理学奖解读

1985年,Donna Strickland和Gérard Mourou等提出了啁啾脉冲放大(chirped pulse amplification,CPA)技术的概念,这是超高峰值功率超短脉冲激光技术发展的一个重要里程碑,直接推动了超强超短激光和强场激光物理等研究领域的诞生。目前,利用CPA技术已经可以获得峰值功率达到10拍瓦(PW,1 PW =10¹⁵ W)量级的激光脉冲,被认为是“将影响从聚变到天体物理的每一项研究”的成果。也正因此,发明啁啾脉冲放大(CPA)技术的法国科学家Gérard Mourou和加拿大科学家Donna Strickland,获得了2018年诺贝尔物理学奖。首先,初步介绍了Strickland和Mourou提出的啁啾脉冲放大(CPA)技术;然后,结合上海光学精密机械研究所强场激光物理国家重点室在超强超短激光技术和强场激光物理研究等方面的成果,以及承担的国家重大科技基础设施项目“上海超强超短激光实验装置”,简单介绍了Gérard Mourou和Donna Strickland 获奖的意义;最后,对相关领域未来发展进行了初步的展望。     

Department Director’s Fund for Earthquake Relief

The NSFC-JST Workshop on Environment Conservation and Restoration Using Bioremediation Function/Technology was successfully held in Xi＇an from June 24 to 25, 2008. Prof. He Minghong, Vice President of NSFC, and Mr. Fumiaki Takahashi, Executive Director of JST, headed delegations respectively to attend the workshop and delivered speeches at the workshop. About 30 scientists from Japan and China as well as the representatives from both funding agencies joined the meeting.     

NSFC Delegation Visits the U.S.

The Science Fund Performance Evaluation Delegation, headed by Prof. Sun Jiaguang, Vice President of NSFC, visited the U. S. A. from July 6 to 11, 9008. During the visit, the delegation met with the administrative sections of the National Science Foundation （NSF）, National Institutes of Health （NIH） and the White House Office of Management and Budget （OMB）, and obtained more comprehensive under-standing of the concepts, procedures, structures and relevant working systems of performance evaluation at NSF and NIH through face-to-face consultation and discussion. The delegation was composed of NSFC staff from the Bureau of Planning, Bureau of Finance, Bureau of Policy, Bureau of International Cooperation, General Office and a representative from the Chinese Ministry of Finance.     

President Chen Yiyu Met with Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chari Sirindhorn of Thailand

On August 9, 2008, Professor Chen Yiyu, President of NSFC, met with the delegation headed by Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chari Sirindhorn of Thailand. Since her first visit to China in 1981, Princess Maha Chari Sirindhorn has visited China for more than 20 times. As an envoy of her father, the king of Thailand, she came to Beijing this time to attend the opening ceremony of the 29th Olympic Games.     

Vice President Shen Wenqing Met with ANR President

On November 19, 2008, Prof. Shen Wenqing, NSFC Vice President, met with Dr. Jacques Stern, the visiting President of the French National Research Agency （ANR）. The Attendees from NSFC were Mr. Zhang Zhaotian, Deputy Director-general, and Mr. Liu Ke, Director of Division from the Department of Information Sciences, and Mr. Lu Rongkai, Director of Division of the Bureau of International.
