Aging of the erythrocyte. III. Cation content

Summary Studies on the main cation content of density-separated bovine erythrocytes showed a progressive decrease in the levels of K⁺ and Mg²⁺ with increasing cell density (and age) accompanied by an increase in the level of Na⁺. The magnitude of net cation loss corresponded to that of red cell volume decrease, but could not account for the total increase in the microviscosity of the erythrocyte interior.

Summary Isoosmotic lysis times of various density (age) fractions of human, pig and ox erythrocytes in glycerol and ammonium chloride solutions decreased with increasing cell density.I am indebted to Prof. W. Leyko for many stimulating discussions.     

Aging of the erythrocyte. XIV. ATP content does decrease

Summary ATP content shows a cell-age dependent decrease in bovine erythrocytes separated according to Murphy. An important point in the evaluation of results lies in considering differences in the ATP consumption between cells of various age during separation. The decrease in ATP occurs in spite of diminished ATPase activity in older cells. We are indebted to Prof. W. Leyko for valuable remarks.     

Effects of tetraphenyboron on erythrocyte enzymes

Rusemen El tratamiento de glóbulos rojos humanos con concentraciones no-hemolíticas de borotetrafenilo causa una reducción irreversible en las activides de la glucosa-6-fosfato dehidrogenasa, una enzima citoplasmática y de la acetilcolinesterasa, ubicada en la superficie externa de la membrana eritrocitaria. El tratamiento casi no tiene efecto alguno sobre la fosfatasa ácida.     

The effect of flavin coenzymes on the activity of erythrocyte enzymes

Zusammenfassung Aktivitätsmessung von 14 Erythrozytenenzymen normaler Personen mit und ohne Hinzufügung der Flavinenzyme Flavinmononukleotid (FMN) und Flavinadenindinukleotid (FAD). Keines der untersuchten Enzyme wurde durch FMN aktiviert, während jedoch FAD die Glutathione Reduktase und die NADH Methämoglobin Reduktase stimulierte.     

Improved extraction and determination of some glycolytic enzymes in the human erythrocyte

Zusammenfassung Die Aktivitäten von 7 glykolytischen Enzymen wurden in normalen menschlichen Erythrozyten gemessen. Kurze Ultraschall-Hämolyse und modifizierte Test-Bedingungen führten, verglichen mit den höchsten Werten, zu signifikant höheren Aktivitäten.     

Inactivation studies of angiotensin II by purified enzymes

Zusammenfassung Die hochgereinigte Arylamidase vom Schweinehirn spaltet, im Gegensatz zur ebenfalls isolierten Säureprotease und Aminopeptidase, Ile⁵-Angiotensin II, wobei die ersten 5 N-terminalen Aminosäuren von hydrolytischen Enzymen freigesetzt werden.     

Ageing of the erythrocyte. XVI. Free amino acid content

Summary The concentrations of some free amino acids, especially glycine, histidine, isoleucine, methionine, phenylalanine, serine and tyrosine decrease considerably during the intravascular ageing of bovine erythrocytes. They seem to provide as sensitive an indication of red cell age as creatine does.Stimulating discussions with Prof. W. Leyko and the experimental help of Mrs A. Rogala, are greatly acknowledged.     

Biochemistry of the erythrocyte

Zusammenfassung Der Erythrozyt hat zwei Hauptwege für den Glukoseabbau. Der Emden-Meyerhoff-Weg resultiert in der Phosphorylierung von ADP zu ATP und der Reduktion von NAD⁺ zu NADH. Der Hexose-Monophosphat-Weg ermöglicht andererseits die Reduktion von NADP⁺ zu NADPH. Es besteht eine beachtliche Beweglichkeit in der Kontrolle dieser Bahnen, die es dem Erythrozyten ermöglichen, seine Enzyme und sein Hämoglobin in aktiver Form und das Konzentrationsgefälle von Natrium und Kalium zwischen roten Blutkörperchen und Plasma zu erhalten.

Proteolytic enzymes in the Rhodnius prolixus midgut.

Sequential chromatographic fractionation of Rhodnius prolixus midgut homogenate yielded only one endopeptidase, but revealed the presence of carboxypeptidase-A and B-like enzyme, di- and tripeptidases, as well as aminopeptidase activities.     

Lysosomal enzymes in the juxtaglomerular cell granules.

In addition to the already known acid phosphatase and beta-glucuronidase, 2 other lysosomal enzymes: aryl sulphatase and N-acetyl-beta-glucosaminidase were localized by histochemical methods in the renin-containing granules of the mouse juxtaglomerular cells.     

Physiological studies on the effects of nutritional imbalance on the central nervous system. II. Effects of thiamine deficiency on oxidative enzymes in the brain of chicken, Gallus domesticus.

The activitiy levels of succinate dehydrogenase, glutamate dehydrogenase and pyruvate dehydrogenase in the fore, mid and hind brain regions of the thiamine deficient chicken, Gallus domesticus were determined. The activity levels of succinate dehydrogenase and glutamate dehydrogenase in all the 3 regions of brain showed augmentation on inducing thiamine deficiency. In contrast the activity levels of pyruvate dehydrogenase decreased in the brain of thiamine deficient animals. It is suggested that these changes in the oxidative enzymes indicate disturbance caused in the operation of the tricarboxylic acid cycle in thiamine deficiency.     

On the ultrastructure of the carp erythrocyte

Zusammenfassung An den ultradünnen Schnittpräparaten von Erythrozyten der KarauscheCarassius auratus wurde ihre submikroskopische Struktur mit dem Elektronenmikroskop sowie auch mit dem Lichtmikroskop untersucht. Im Cytoplasma der Erythrocyten kann man immer die undurchsichtigen Granula beobachten, welche durch ein feines Kanälchen in Zusammenhang mit der Zell- und Kernmembran stehen. Es ist festgestellt, dass der Kern aus achromatischen Fäden mit Schraubenwindung, undurchsichtigen Chromatingranula und Kernmembran von Doppelnatur besteht. Die Befunde der Schnitte stimmen mit den schon früher vonYasuzumi und seinen Mitarbeitern nachgewiesenen Resultaten überein.
