Summary Methanolysis of podophyllotoxin (I) with ZnCl₂ as catalyst yields podophyllinic acid methyl ester (IV) and neopodophyllotoxin (V), a new isomer of podophyllotoxin. Neopodophyllotoxin which contains the lactone group in the 1,3-position is stereospecifically hydrolyzed by alkali to the hitherto unknown podophyllinic acid (VI).

Summary Electron micrographs were made of the cellulose part of the cell walls of pollen tubes ofPetunia hybrida, grown in selfed self-sterile plants and on agar plates. Summary (-)-Emetine, as prepared by total synthesis, has the same antiamebic activity and toxicity as the natural alkaloid. On the contrary its antipode and rac. isoemetine are not active and practically non-toxic. A relationship between configuration and antiamebic activity has thus been demonstrated for various representatives of the emetine series.

Summary It is demonstrated that the abnormally high respiratory quotient of the green tobacco leaf as described by various authors is due to an insufficient supply of oxygen to the tissues. In pure oxygen the quotient is 1.0.

Summary A report is given on the histological findings after the application of hyaluronic acid to the tibiae of adult guinea pigs. The possible importance of these findings for human medicine is briefly discussed and the results so far obtained in humans are given.

Summary Amino acid separation with 6 different solvents on chromatoplates prepared from Kieselgel G (Merck) is described. As demonstrated in Figur 8 and discussed in the text, this technique is equal or superior to paper chromatography.

Summary In Cyanophyceae (Oscillatoria, Nostoc), it is possible to show a nuclear equivalent system with the use of acridin orange as fluorochrome. The equivalents are rodshaped and spiral structures respectively, showing a certain arrangement to each other and to the threadaxis (Oscillatoria), or not (Nostoc). Independently of this, equivalents of chondriosomes may be ascertained in the metachromatic granula on using berberin as fluorochrome. The granula contrast with the nuclear equivalent in periplasma. In contradiction toBringmann, an isotopic localisation of nuclear equivalents and metachromatic granula could not be confirmed.

Summary Phosphoroguanidates, a class of compounds which includes the enzymatically-active phosphagens, exhibit exceptionalin vitro stability. This lack of reactivity implies anin vivo mode of activation, as yet undiscerned. A variety of metal ions catalyse the cleavage of the phosphorus-nitrogen bond with consequent phosphoryl-group transfer, but the enhancement of rate seems insufficient to account for the known activities of phosphoro-creatine and phosphoro-arginine. It is suggested that yet another mode of activation, chemical or biochemical, awaits discovery.

Summary Using series of different reactions it has been possible to demonstrate that the tricarboxylic acid arising from anthranilic acid and pyruvic acid has not the constitution I but is correctly represented by IV. Several derivatives of this tricarboxylic acid were shown to have formulae that are in sharp contrast to those found in literature.     

Oxydation von Bernsteinsäure durch Leber akut urämischer Ratten

Summary The oxydative desamination of amino acids in the liver of acute uremic rats is increased. Simultaneously the citric acid cycle in the liver of these rats is stimulated. It is suggested that the ketone-acids formed by the increased amino acid degradation are removed by the activated citric acid cycle.
