引入讨论生命与认知的进化论框架,介绍生命哲学的有关要点,分析认知和生命的连续性,并以此为本体论和方法论的框架,讨论认知的主要特征,认知活动与其它生命活动的区别,分析生命和认知的各种进路:内在论进路和外在论进路,对称的和不对称的外在论进路,以及从对称的外在论进路演变出来的协同演化论。最后,简略地叙述协同演化论对认识论中各大流派的含义:即它在以实在论/反映论为一方,实用主义/实践论为另一方的辩论中对哪一方提供了更多的支持。
