| Abstract: | Distribution and morphology of argyrophil cells in intestines of Columba livia domestica were studied by using the Grimelius argyrophil staining technique. The results are as follows. In the small intestine and rectum, argyrophil cells distribute wavelike. The density of argyrophil cells is higher in the jejunum and rectum than in the duodenum, ileum and caecum. Most of the argyrophil cells are shuttle-shaped, cone-shaped or long cone-shaped.They are located between the intestinal epithelial cells and the epithelial cells of intestinal glands. Some cells have one process which reaches into the gut lumen or lamina proprla. Some have two processes, one extends the gut lumen, the other extends the lamina propia. |
