Abstract:The changes and effects of glycosaminoglycans(GAGs)on early corneal morphogenesis of Bufo raddei Strauch(from stage 16,to stage 25)are studied histochemically with light microscopy.The results show that the regular changes of GAGs occurred in various parts of the cornea at different development stages. The hyaluronic acid(HA)in the presumptive corneal epithelium begins to increase at stage 19 and reaches its peak at stage 22 and then decreases.The migration mesenchymal cells starts at stage 20.Thus,it is suggested that HA is related to the migration of mesenchymal cells and the formation of corneal stroma rudiment. The contents of keratan sulfate(KS),begin to increase at stage 22,and the inner cornal transparency also initiates at the same stage.This is indicated that KS is its main factor to the corneal transparency.All of these changes associated with the morphogenesis of cornea and the effects of GAGs on the early cornenl differenti- ation are discussed.
