廖燕杂剧创作论略

廖燕生于清朝初年,饱读经书,却屡试不中。最后只好放弃举业,厕身私塾。他长于诗古文词,更有传奇杂剧《柴舟别集》。《柴舟别集》共分《醉画图》、《镜花亭》、《诉琵琶》、《续诉琵琶》四种,是各有一出的短剧。这些作品在当时虽然不一定适合舞台演出,但都特色鲜明,思想性、艺术性俱佳,是岭南文化艺术大观园中的一支奇葩。

On Liao Yan's Drama Creation

LIAO Yan, born in the early Qing Dynasty, failed the provincial civil service examination repeatedly although he＇s well read. Finally he had to give up and taught in a private school. He＇s skilled in ancient poetry, prose and diction and had created the Chuanqi and Zaju called Chaizhou Collections. It is composed of four short plays, such as Zui Hua Tu, The Jinghua Pavilion, Su Pipa, and Xu Su Pipa. These Zaju works may not be suitable to perform on stage at that time, but with the unique features, admirable thoughts and arts, they become one exotic flower in the Grand Sight Garden of Ling-nan culture and art. LIAO Yan is a man as milestones in the cultural and historical development course in Shaozhou.
