＂Defamiliarization＂ in To His Coy Mistress

As one of the distinguished representatives of the Metaphysical School, Andrew Marvell infused new life into To His Coy Mistress by the use of ＂defamiliarization＂ in both structure and language. ＂Defamiliarization＂, widely used by Russian For- malism, is a concept put forward by Viktor Shklovsky in his essay ＂Art as Device＂ in 1917. Writers use it to make what is familiar unfamiliar in literature by combining various literature skills in order to arouse in readers vividness and liveliness of their daily life. In To His Coy Mistress, Andrew Marvell borrowed the reasoning and lyric elements of the classical poets and romantic poets respec- tively, integrated ingenious ＂conceit＂, broke the traditional shackles of love poems in the structure and language and accordingly expressed the themes of the poem perfectly and enriched reader＇ s reading experiences.
