Abstract:The fundamental function and work principle of the Innerspace 449 Thermal Depth Sounder Recorder were given firstly in this article. then a real example was presented to demonstrate that the application of Innercpace 449 Thermal Depth Sounder Recorder in the study of sandwaves in channel was a valid and direct method. We carried out a field survey with the Innerspace 449 Thermal Depth Sounder Recorder and GPS (Globe Position System) in South channel, South Passage and North Passage of Changjiang estuary in March, July and August, 1997. According to the mark of the Innerspace 449 Thermal Depth Sounder Recorder, it was sure that there were large scale sandwaves in fore section of south channel of Changjiang in normal flood season. and based on the analysis of these datas, a series of characteristics of both single wave and sandwaves were revealed, such as their distributary, their geometric feature, the rate of L/H and their symmetry the correlation between sandwaves and flow, etc. These findings can offer a good reference for not only the study of sandwave movement and the bed load transport but also the openness and maintenance of channel.
