The Sense of the Particle OUT: A Cognitive Linguistic Analysis

The particle OUT is frequently employed in English phrasal verbs, and its sense is traditionally considered unanalyzeable as prepositions a nd adverbs in English Idioms. However, its sense can actually be analyzed accord ing to the image schema in the Figure and Ground Theory, and its basic sense ref ers to the movement of something from the inside to the outside. It features in phrasal verbs with eighteen meanings including its conceptual metaphorical exten sions and these meanings have positive influence on the sense of phrasal verbs.
