Toward the end of Qing Dynasty,driven by the geopolitical and economic need to enter the Indian Ocean and South China Sea,Germany increased its exports of munitions,technology,equipment,and merchandises to Yunnan,in an attempt to contain its two conventional rivals in Europe,Great Britain and France.Before the outbreak of the First World War in 1914,Germany had become the dominant munitions supplier and the major provider of industry's technological facilities in Yunnan.
