This paper discusses issues of identity in Hong Kong as manifested in the social institution of yumcha.Hong Kong style yumcha is more than a form of eating;rather,it is a cultural domain in which social relations are reinforced and identities constructed.The material culture and consumption behavior surrounding yumcha are part and parcel of the process of producing and repeoducing a metropolitan identity,characterized by syncretism,inclusivity,adaptivity,and a desire for transformation.The paper examines how yumcha is related to political uncertainty ,familial relationships,as well as local trends of globalization.
