Development Prospects of Global Mobile Satellite Communications

The paper presents the trend of satellite communication applications from fixedlacation communication to moblile communication. It describes the extension of satellite constellation design from traditional geostationary orbit to the newly-proposed low and medium earth orbits. In particular, the low/medium orbit systems are analyzed and compared in detail, with specific examples. The paper then briefly explains the global personal communication system and the global positioning system. Finally, it points out the satellite communication will play the same important role as the optical fiber communication in the National Information Infrastructure and the "Information Superhighway".
