晚清时期萍乡的功名人士急剧增多,绅士群体得到了壮大。这与萍乡的助学机构"六堂"有着极大的联系,"六堂"促进了萍乡教育的发展并且逐渐成为地方绅士处理公共事务的场所。随着萍乡煤矿的开办,萍乡开始了近代化的历程,萍乡也逐渐成为各方势力争夺的焦点,这加剧了地方的动荡。地方绅士的权力趁机得到了扩张。

Expansion of Pingxiang＇s Gentry Population and Their Power in Late Qing Dynasty

A sharp increase of people getting high national academic rank in late Qing Dynasty has expandedlocal gentry in Pingxiang as a consequence of efforts made by a student assistance institution, Liu Tang, whichpromoted the development of local education and evolved to be a place for local gentry to deal with publicaffairs. With the establishment of Pingxiang Coal Mine Company, Pingxiang began the process ofmodernization making itself a focus of contention, which exacerbated the turmoil in this place. Meanwhile, localgentry took the opportunity to expand.
