由于性别的差异，男性和女性在语言使用方面表现出不同的特征。在前人研究的基础上，通过问卷调查的方法，发现男性话语具有语气强烈、直接果断、有特定话题、对发音不重视等特征。产生这些特征的原因有生理、心理、社会背景、性别原型、亚文化等方面的因素。指出，男性气质的建构，主要通过语音语调、特定的词汇和语法模式、话题选择、话语方式与策略等方面来实现。在表现男性话语气质的同时，遵循利奇提出的合作原则和格莱斯提出的礼貌原则，能使语言交际顺利进行。
