铜川地貌按照形态成因原则，可分为岩石地貌与构造地貌。前按照岩性形态原则，还可为灰岩地貌、砂页岩地貌、砂砾地貌（即丹霞地貌），以及黄土地貌等；后按照构造性质与地表形态原则，亦可划分为单面山、方山、背斜山、断块山、地垒山、褶皱推覆体山、断层谷及地堑陷落盆地等。地面发育史是以构造为线索，以古地形特点为标志，以新生代侵蚀作用与沉积物为依据划分的。
