Abstract:with a special morphohistological study(Achucarro-Hortega staining),the evidence for a pineal complex in the brain of the ricefield eel(Monopterus albus Zuiew)is presented.The results of routine histological and electron microscopic studies demonstrate that the pineal complex is composed of an end-vesicle,a pineal stalk and a dorsal sac each part of the complex consists of photoreceptor-like cells,supporticve cells and ganglion cells.The photoreceptor-like cels,resembling the retinal potoreceptors of the vertebrate lateral eyes,display a distinct structural and functional compartmentalization characterized by the existence of four basic cellulaar regions,i.e.,outer segment, inner segment,cell body and basal process.Since there are secretory -like granules in the photorecep-tor -like cells,it is reasonable to iner that the pineal complex of the ricefield eel may have both a photosensory and a secretory function.The poorly developed outer segment in the photoreceptor-like cells,however,implies that conitoring of ambient light levels is an unimportant function of the pineal complex in the ricefield eel,a burrowing fish.
