摘    要: 以mRNA疫苗为代表的第三代疫苗技术在抗击新型冠状病毒肺炎的过程中发挥了巨大作用。卡塔琳·卡里科和德鲁·魏斯曼合作开发的利用假尿苷及其类似物修饰mRNA的技术是mRNA疫苗成功研制的关键基础。通过回顾该技术的主要开拓者卡塔琳·卡里科的科研历程和新冠mRNA疫苗的研发工作,提出了相关的思考和启示。卡里科的成功与其在困境面前坚定信念,持之以恒地踏实从事基础研究的精神品质是密不可分的,启发学界与社会要进一步关注基础研究在推动源头性创新上的关键作用。

Abstract:The third-generation vaccine technology represented by mRNA vaccine has played a important role in the fight against the novel coronavirus pneumonia (COVID-19). The technique of modifying mRNA with pseudouridine and its analogs developed by Katalin Karikó and Drew Weissman is the key basis for the successful development of mRNA vaccine. The scientific research road of the main pioneer of this technology, Katalin Karikó, and the research and development of the mRNA COVID-19 vaccines provide us with much food of thought. Karikó's success is inseparable from her firm belief in face of difficulties and the spirit of persistently and steadfastly engaging in basic research. One should pay more attention to the key role of basic research in promoting the source innovation.
