Abstract:Thirty-five solar proton flares and 500 hPa height data from the NOAA Space Envi- ronment Service Center and the European Meteotrology Center are used to analyse 500 hPa mean height change 1 to 7 days after flares.The statistical results suggest that the effect of solar proton flares on atmospheric circulation has two peaks.The early effect seems to be 1-2 days and the late effect 4-5 days after flares;The winter season showed a stronger early response than does the summer,but the summer is the predominant season over the winter in the overall observed response;The maximum 24-hr circulation changes occur in the North Africa-South Europe-Southwest Asia area.In addition,the analysis of the March 6,1989 flare event showed the effect of this an order stronger than the average of thirty-five flares.
