历史具有历史本体和历史意识两重含义,历史本体是客观的,而历史意识具有主观性。对历史的认识要受历史观的支配,西方的历史观在唯物史观产生以前经历了英雄史观、道德史观、天命史观、理性史观、历史哲学的演进,这些理论虽然都不可避免的带有历史局限性,但都是当时哲学思想和史学理论的优秀成果,都是人类思想进化的阶梯,为唯物史观的创建提供了理论前提。唯物史观的创立实现了社会历史观的伟大革命变革。

History contains double meaning of history noumenon and history consciousness. History noumenon is objective, and history consciousness has the quality of subjectiveness. Understanding history is governed by the conception of history. Before the conception of historical materialism, there had been a successive series of conception of history in the West as heroic conception of history, moral conception of history, God's will conception of history, rational conception of history and philosophy of history, these theories inevitably had historical limitations, but they were excellent achievements of philosophical thinking and historical theory at that time and steps in the evolution of human ideology, and they provided theoretical premise for the founding of materialist conception of history. The founding of materialist conception of history achieved the great revolution of social conception of history.
