| Abstract: | The effectiveness of permanganate preoxidation on the control of chlorophenols is studied using phenol as the model precursor. It is found that when the ratio of chlorine to phenol is at 3:l, chlorophenol is at its maximum production. The results show that permanganate preoxidation effectively reduces the amount ,of chlorophenols formed in the following disinfection process. The results of ultraviolet spectra determination and TOC analysis suggest the possible ring destruction of phenol molecules and partial mineralization by permanganate preoxidation. 1990 |
