Studies on Interlanguage Variability： A Chaos- theoretical Perspective

The theory of Interlanguage Variability is an influential but controversial subject in the field of the Second Language Acquisition studies. The critical focus is on whether the language learner＇s competence is variable. The arguments are rooted in the controversy over the notion of interlanguage as ＂heterogeneous＂ or ＂homogeneous＂ system. The four characteristics of interlanguage, namely, systematicness, variability, permeability and dynamic development, are in accordance with the non - linear characteristics of chaos.
