MATURE SPOROPHYTES CULTURED FROM THE MALE GAMETOPHYTES OF LAMINARIA JAPONICA ARESCH.

The present paper is an aeeount of experimental results on culturing sporophytes from male gametophytes of Laminaria japonica Aresch. Young sporophytes were first cultured from the male gametophytes in laboratory, and then transplanted into the sea for maturation. The mature sporophytes show an abnormal growth, The sporangia from the malformed sporophytes can spawn zoospores which, when attached to some substrate, can germinate gametophytes normally. The numbers of male and female gametphytes are almost even.
